Mainstream Islam as practiced by normal common folk IS extreme even without the violence.
As but one example, there is universal agreement among all five branches of Islam that apostacy warrants death. Ok, well, extreme as that is, it is not news to anyone but the ignorant. What is news is that apostacy warrants death is a view held by the a MAJORITY of Moslems in Egypt and Pakistan.
It took them an hour, an hour, to storm the building. People were tweeting begging for someone to come in.
Meh, multiple hot tones going off at the same time (one of which involved the president), resources spread incredibly thin, I'm not shocked by this at all.
So again: what do we do?? No one knows. There's no right or wrong answer. It's difficult as hell. How do we fight a radical ideology? One of the hardest questions yet IMHO.
It's not just how do we fight a radical ideology. It's specifically how do we fight a free pass to Heaven and 72 virgins? The virgins surely appeal to some but Heaven is the clincher. Since Islam's entry to Heaven is based on belief and good deeds no Muslim knows for sure if they are gonna get there. Belief in Allah is not enough. Who knows if they have done enough good deeds or if their good deeds have outweighed their bad deeds? Only their Allah knows. Radical Islam's persuasive martyr guaranteed entry into Heaven is pretty hard to beat in a religion with no guarantees for anyone else.
It doesn't matter if it's a misinterpretation of the Quran or not. It's what they believe. Any person faced with a life of poverty, hunger, hate and violence, raised with violence and taught to hate, and offered a way to escape that terrible life into wondrous Heaven might make the same choice.
It's silly to point out that 88% of Egyptians support the death penalty for leaving Islam as an example of the extreme nature of the religion (and of its main stream followers)?

Yes … It's a human problem that pops up far too commonly throughout human history …
"The White Man's Burden" (colonial imperialism) …

Yes, it is silly … It's inflammatory bigotry … (IMHO) ...

The Hanafi Madhab does not consider apostasy to be a Hadud Crime--a crime that requires a punishment.
The Shafi'i and Maliki Madhabs consider it a Hadud crime, but the criteria to convict is so strict it has never been possible to convict anyone of it.
The Hanbali Madhabli consider it a hadud crime if the apostasy results in treason.
Iran and Pakistan both consider apostasy to be permissible and a persons right. However, both are notorious about finding other crimes to convict apostates under.

Sources please.
What accounts, then, for this terrible misunderstanding on the part of Moslems worldwide who support death for apostasy? These Moslems must be terribly misinformed.
