I don't eat pizza much - full of calories.

It was pretty funny to see though. We were in the dorm, the pizza shows up, wasn't stuffed crust like he wanted. I didn't expect it to be such a big deal, but it was.

Cedar Rapids gained 1,793 residents over that stretch, for an increase of 1.42% since 2010. That means Davenport actually has the highest growth rate of all three cities since the last census. Those stubborn facts, eh?

Now, if you want to talk MSAs...then you're already ceding my earlier point about suburban sprawl. Virtually all of Des Moines' growth is from suburban sprawl, and not from core urban renewal...like the kind Davenport has experienced with a large increase in downtown loft housing.
Are you kidding???

None of what you are saying makes any sense and shows you don't know the region.

Almost all of Des Moines propers' growth since the early 2000's has been downtown or inner city redevelopment and loft/apartment style housing. That has comprised the majority of the city's jump from 198,000 in 2000 to 206,000 in 2012. There has been some southeast side growth but it's negligible compared to what has happened downtown.

And on that note, Des Moines' downtown housing boom has FAR surpassed the Davenport activity. So you can't even call Davenports downtown growth as accounting for anything close, per capita, to Des Moines'.

You are trying to skew the data in your argument so that it seems like Davenport is growing faster downtown than Des Moines in spite of the overall population gain being much slower by pointing to the Des Moines metro's growth as being predominately suburban. It just isn't so. Downtown Des Moines has grown more than downtown Davenport as well as the Des Moines metro area also growing at a much faster rate than the QC metro. But you are trying to slam Des Moines by making it seem that Davenports small amount of growth is ALL downtown which Des Moines propers' growth also predominately is, while then pointing immediately to the Des Moines 'Metro' wide growth as being the same in essence.

Davenport proper vs. Des Moines metro vs. Des Moines proper vs. QC metro. Two completely different worlds.

whoa...I missed on first read funk's gaffe indicating Davenport downtown housing was somehow a model that DM downtown needed to follow. I was incorrectly assuming by all his smack talk that he actually spent time in DM....maybe even lived here. I guess the cat is outta the bag...he obviously hasn't spent any time of any substance here.

For the record, at current rate, downtown Des Moines is adding 400-500 residential units per year.

Sooooo...Davenport is beating that rate according to funksoulbro?

Business Record: What s the next big thing downtown

The figures from the US Census show that Des Moines (the city proper, not the metro) is the 11th fastest growing city out of the 25 largest in the Midwest over the past couple of years, and does not lead the pack in any way:

Whatever. I remember the time Mount Sterling's population grew by 20% pretty much overnight. A family of six moved to town and a retired couple had their grandson move in with them.

You should e-mail the link for that data to the reporter at the Des Moines Register who wrote the original article (that made the growth claims) & that the op linked to in the original post here.

Be careful what you read into a newspaper article headline.....

Does the article claim Des Moines is THE FASTEST growing of all of the cities in the Midwest? Or is it that it simply outpaces many other cities in the region? (tricky...the reporter made you jump to a conclusion he/she never technically made)

I couldn't believe when funk stated that Davenport had this huge downtown boom that Des Moines could only wish for. It's actually the total opposite. Thats what spurred my post.

Additionally, I just noticed something that kept jumping out at me on the Grand Rapids data, for example, given that it was on the list right next to Des Moines' numbers. Grand Rapids & some other cities had no difference in the first 2 figures on the chart but Des Moines & some others did.
Shouldn't the data & increases be based on the actual numbers obtained in the April 1, 2010 census count, which is the first number given for each city on your list? I think it's incorrect to instead use the 2010-2012 estimate data from the 2nd figure which is called the April 1, 2010 base estimate. The first figure is derived from an actual count & seems to be the one that we should be looking at.
If that is the case, then the Des Moines 2012 estimate of growth would correctly have been an additional 751 higher. In other words it would have placed Des Moines at a rank of at least 9th on the list & it would in fact be pushing on toward 8th place.
