I guess that Americans are far more popular than Germans...In Europe, everybody hates each other, but Americans are probably more popular than nationals of neighbouring countries. People here even hate people of towns separated by 3 miles, old feuds that have been going for centuries and centuries.
IMO, it all about how the Americans act. Those who speak at least some of the native tongue, observe and respect local traditions and cultures and negate the typical arrogant US stereotype are far better off than ignorant tourists.
As for Eurpoean countries disliking each other some don't care for Germans, others dislike the French and many nations have tolerated each other without discord for centuries.

Tourism is so massive that nobody ask tourists to speak the local language, all touristy areas speak a multilanguage pidgin. They do not need to respect local traditions either, just some respect and common sense, for example, not to pis.s on the Fontana de Trebi or on the midsts of the Ramblas (drunk Brits do it all the time). But Americans tend to behave very well, also Russians.
Also, in highly touristy areas, tourists are not seen as from a particular nationality, but as tourists.
I think you expect more than you can get. Europe has its own problems, dilemmas etc. just like the USA. What is your problem with your country? If it is possible be specific...

My original post is a response to the thread title. A visitor is in a completely different state of mind than someone who is relocating because of work, love of another country or romance. While living in Europe I found myself wanting to keep a distance from visiting Americans. I knew they had little understanding of the nature of their surroundings and wouldn't be around long enough to change how the locals felt about outsiders.
The touristy areas are well prepared to helpvisitors separate themselves from their money via legit and gray areas goods and services. European capitalism at it's finest. Loved watching the locals and their wares with items without price tags and ready to fetch a premium.
The best place would be Spain for me., the culture, traditions.. Nothing beats Spain.Their culture is so rich.. They always have festivities. They have fiestas all over Spain and their Holy Week is really so big. Spanish are not like most Europeans that are a bit uptight. They are considered to be the most party people in the world..plus, their dance is also good and classy.. Language is good too ( for the ones who like Spanish ). Plus of course 365 days of Sunshine .
