Why don't northerners really drink sweet tea? (living in, metro area)

Southerners are serious about their sweet tea. When you consider that its tea and sugar, the battles over whose is better is comical.
For me, its way too sweet.
I liken it to the idea of loving peanut butter. Most people would not like all natural, no sugar added peanut butter, so, its not the peanuts that they like, its the SUGAR, aka "legal crack".
nobody outside of the south drinks sweet tea. It's not just north, it's midwest and everyone west of the Mississippi too
Absolutely true about the West of the Mississippi part. I've lived in 3 different Western states and have visited all over the place in many others and I've never seen it in any restaurant (other than the bottled tea) or met anyone who actually drinks it. My guess is most Westerners have never even tasted it or have any idea Southern tea is any different than the unsweetened iced tea the rest of the country drinks.
The first time I ordered iced tea in NC was at a drive thru place. I took a huge gulp, and spit it all over my windshield. It was horrible to get the sticky fluid off that windshield btw!
That was the first I ever heard of sweet tea. I actually took it inside and said I had not asked for tea with sugar in it. Lol they looked at me like I was an alien. They had nothing but sweet tea so refunded me the $ and gave me tap water.
I just never ordered any tea again. I worked at a place once where they made sweet tea. They put 5 pounds of sugar in a 5 gallon container, and it took forever to dissolve. We learned to make it with hot water while adding sugar, and the rest was cold water added.
Not big on any sweetened drink, and definitely not that much sweet.

They also put milk in their tea, which is an abomination.
FWIW iced tea with a very small amount of sweetener (similar to the lower sugar Honest Tea flavors) is often better than unsweetened. But sweetened anything to soda levels is disgusting. Not to mention considering how much fluid I drink (2 quarts a day isn't out of the ordinary) I'd be morbidly obese if I mixed a lot of sugar in.
