I'm from NC and I went to visit New York City and I asked for sweet tea and they gave me a weird look and just gave me unsweetened tea with some sugar packs to put in it.
Not really since sweet tea has alot more sugar than your standard iced tea.
Personally I can't stand the stuff.
I tried Southern sweetened tea for the first and only time when I visited Texas as a teenager. I thought it was incredibly nasty and would never touch it again. I'm sure many native Northerners would agree with me and that's why few of us drink it.
If I want iced tea, I drink it unsweetened. If I want something sugary sweet I'll drink regular soda, lemonade, or Kool-aid, all of which taste much better than sweetened ice tea.
Never had Arizona Southern Style Sweet IceTea either? Made in NY.. it's about the same..
You know what?....I think I have, but too far back in my taste memory to recall. If I'm gonna have Arizona though I'm probably gonna be more drawn to the regular flavor.
I didn't call it sweet tea either. We always called it iced tea or just tea. I am not sure where "sweet tea" came from. The only time I use the term sweet tea is when I am in a restaurant, and prefer my tea sweetened. And you are right, one cup of sugar is fine for me.
In Philly there are places that only have sweet iced tea and places that have only unsweetened, and then places that have both. You are right that "sweet tea" is just plain ol iced tea.
