Good for you and In2itive! Unfortunately, from reading all the responses here it looks like the vast majority of the cat people are stridently humor free.

I love both. I think the combo of a cat and a dog is awesome, if they grow up together especially they are often so cute together. Watching them play, it's clearly brains vs brawn, and brains usually win, lol. Dogs don't have the patience cats have so they never win the war.

Dog.

Though I did rescue a kitten on the street once. Had it for years.

I would never have another cat. Pointless.

I just have to ask. Why do you think so?

What I want to get out of a pet I can only get from a dog and very specific ones at that.

Explain. What are your favorite breeds, and why?

I like several breeds and several would do, but I have had rough and smooth collies.

Entirely predictable, reliable, family friendly dogs who are smart enough to learn anything and are nearly maintenance-free once raised/trained. No accidents, no chewing, no drooling, no digging, no general destruction or mayhem. And patient/gentle with kids with a wariness and alerting with strangers. My smoothie chased off an intruder once.

But that isn't what I mean by what I want from a pet. I am looking for a reliable, useful companion I can count on to do its job and add to the family dynamic in a friendly, involved way. Not some foolio who just eats my food. There has to be a sense of teamwork, and the dog and human have evolved into this relationship over the last 40,000 years. No other animal can claim this.

Oh I wouldn't say that. I think all my cats and I have a great sense of humor!

There is nothing like having a Siamese cat laugh at you when you do something foolish. They know. And some of our most famous comedians have been and are cat lovers.

Does one need to love one and dislike the other? I'm tired of tired Facebook memes that tout the superiority of one over the other.

I agree. Everyone wants a pet for different reasons. None is more or less valid than another.
