LFG does that sometimes for some reason. No speculation if it's for maintenance, trimming the electric bill, or someone forgot to flip the switch on the way out.

I found more accurate information about the proposed Westin Hotel. The latest plans call for an 8-story 180 room hotel on top of a six story parking deck behind the Elm Street Center. The Westin hotel would rise 14-stories. This was the latest information before the name change from Wyndham to Westin. There would be 4, 500 square feet of retail on first floor facing Davie St. The existing Elm Street Center would be incorporated into the hotel as conference space. The building facade would get a face lift as well as a new streetscape design to include drop off space for hotel guest and valet parking. There would be a new fine dining restaurant that would front Elm Street. Based on the construction time schedule of all the downtown projects, the Westin Greensboro will be the first new ground up high-rise in downtown Greensboro in almost 30 years. The height would be comparable to the Guilford Building or the Gateway Plaza Tower. And if Carroll's $90 million project is a part of Aloft, there may be a potential of two high-rise projects going up at the same time. Aloft will open a year after the Westin. We may see a few tower cranes downtown over the next few years.

Here you go. Im hoping they really consider the design of this hotel. I would hope that it doesn't look like a building sitting on a parking deck. In similar buildings across the country architects have designed these buildings so that you cant tell that part of the building is a parking deck. The parking decks are disguised which can be a challenge because decks cant be entirely closed in because of carbon monoxide. Project 561 will be another downtown tower that will sit on a parking deck.

Here is a small deck with retail on the street level that is disguised.

"The plans

Developers plan to build an eight-story, 180-room hotel on top of a six-story parking deck at 200 S. Davie St., according to city documents."

In addition Greensboro plans to build two parking decks downtown. I would love to see the city really explore the design of these decks and add street level retail and restaurants. Here is an example of what I'd like to see downtown. But it's very doubtful city leaders will get this creative.

One of the parking decks the city is planning for downtown will be located on a lot at the corner of East Market Street and Davie street. It will stretch an entire block and the Westin will sit on top of a portion of the parking deck. This would mean the deck would have to be elevated over February One Pl. Somehow. The city wants ground floor retail and restauraunts along Davie St and aesthetics for this deck. The design of the deck will look similar to the design of the Westin. This should be a very interesting deck and will be very different from any parking deck downtown. It will have 850 parking spaces. The hotel developers plan to start construction on the Westin in early 2018 which means construction on the deck will have to begin first maybe sometime later this year. The city plans to purchase the lot and a building for the deck at tomorrows city council meeting. Any building on the lot will be demolished.

From the article, all very exciting news.

"GREENSBORO, N.C. -- With big developments happening in downtown Greensboro, including a hotel on Elm Street, the city wants to make sure there is enough space for everyone.

Tuesday night, the Greensboro City Council is expected to finalize a more than $2 million purchase for a parking lot and building on the corner of Market Street and South Davie Street.

David Parrish is the assistant city manager. He says the city plans to use that space to create a parking deck that goes over February One Place and connects to the Elm Street Center.

According to the Starwood Hotel website, a Westin is expected to open at the Elm Street Center in October 2019.

Parrish says the city is working with the downtown hotel developer to plan the deck, which is unlike any another parking downtown.

”We want retail on the ground floor," Parrish said. "We want the aesthetic look of the parking structure to mirror the hotel architecture."

Parrish says the developer of the hotel would like to start construction in early 2018, so the city needs to make their plans for the deck quickly.

"Once that really gets decided, the movement of the hotel which will be on top of a portion of the parking deck takes a giant step forward," said Zack Matheny, the CEO of Downtown Greensboro Inc.

Money for the new deck, that’s expected to cost $25-30 million, will come from parking fees and the increase in property tax values in the area.

The new deck should add around 850 parking spots. Parrish says those are much needed because the city's four parking decks downtown are often nearly full."

Thoughts? so it's said the hotel to be around 14-16 stories tall, i just hope it's a sexy design

So basically a new "bold" 7 story parking deck, with ground floor retail and a 8 story building on top of a portion of the parking deck.

Based on the footprint of the deck and the number of spaces, it should be about 5 to 6 stories and the Westin will sit on top of the south end of the deck so we are still looking at a hotel around 14 stories. But considering retail and restaurants taking up the ground level add another floor to the deck (7 stories). Its kinda interesting that the deck will go over February One Pl. But im excited about the street level retail and restaurants. The deck seems to be a project in and of itself. Another interesting thing to note is that this deck will be across the street from the News and Record site which will one day have a huge mixed use development. We are going to be seeing a lot of pedestrian activity on Davie Street in the coming years. We are already seeing that a block north of the planned deck with Center City Park, LeBauer Park and the future performing arts center.

Maybe we'll see a deck similar to this.

Greensboro city council votes to enter an agreement with the Westin Hotel developers and votes to purchase property for associated parking deck which will cross over February One Place and sit beneath the hotel. A new high-rise luxury hotel will be coming downtown! Aloft and Hampton Inn & Suites are next.

I think we may be looking something like the Wells Fargo Tower in Norfolk. It's about 12 story office building that sits on top of an 8 story parking deck. Stretching out from the footprint of the building is a parking deck that is essentially surrounded with retail. Obviously, the Westin would be quite a bit smaller, but seems to include the same general idea.

Yea! I get to pay for a parking deck that I won't use!
