If they design the deck correctly, the Westin should look like one massive building stretching over a block with a tower on one end. Downtown is becoming more and more dense with all these midrise and highrise projects.
I think we may be looking something like the Wells Fargo Tower in Norfolk. It's about 12 story office building that sits on top of an 8 story parking deck. Stretching out from the footprint of the building is a parking deck that is essentially surrounded with retail. Obviously, the Westin would be quite a bit smaller, but seems to include the same general idea.
Yes this looks like a similar concept the city is going for the Westin. We will really start to see some pedestrian activity on Davie Street. Just wait until the News and Record site across the street is developed. Davie Street will be jumping like Elm Street.
Here is an old side elevation showing the Wyndham (Westin) with the parking under the hotel with street level retail. Very similar to what the city is proposing now. Back then the hotel was suppose to have more rooms which explains why its three stories taller than the current plan. But you just never know they may go with more rooms once the final plans are revealed to the public.
LeBauer Park in downtown Greensboro across from the performing arts center site is one of two NC parks the makes the list of one of America's best urban parks. The other is Romare Bearden Park in uptown Charlotte.*
Ok here is the latest info on the Westin Greensboro. According to the Rhino Times which got its information from the city, the parking deck will be 6-stories. The Westin hotel will be 11-stories which will sit on top of the south end of the deck. This means the Westin hotel will stand 17-stories tall. The city will own the deck but the Westin will control the mixed-use component on the first floor of the deck. It is expected to be retail, office and maybe restaurants. So my guess about the number of floors on the deck was right but it looks like 3 floors were added to the hotel.
