Well written, HRVT. Particularly salient points underscoring why the procrastination and now delayed timing of move doesn’t make sense.
Yeah I don’t think Stanford and Cal do much either aside from adding a couple of live bodies… honestly, ESPN might be steering the ship on this one. Just a sad state of affairs. Probably need to change the conference name if we’re going this route.
Curious about your GOR statement. Pundits are saying it’s the legal mechanism keeping schools in place but you’re asserting it’s gonna be the undoing of the conference. Is that because of its built in guidelines regarding revenue and distribution?

To be honest, the legal specifics aren't completely clear but it would seem that if there's no conference, the GoR is meaningless. If the conference implodes, the GoR isnt enforceable from what I understand.
So basically tension will build and build and once enough schools know each others' cards and safe landing spots, those schools bolt all at once.
There are a number of ways this could play out. And none of us has the answers. But its fun to speculate.
College athletics is eventually going to implode under the sheer weight of the madness of this current round of realignment. It's obvious that the endgame is football breaking away, with a top division of 40-60 teams raking in all the money, and then a return to smaller regional conferences for the other sports. The sooner this happens, probably the better for everyone. For me, a lot of the enjoyment of college sports has already been lost. Naked greed seems to be the only driving force behind anything, and nothing is sacred except grabbing more dollars. I still watch, but mostly out of habit - every passing year I wonder more why I even care.
Most of the ACC schools are against the expansion with one of the main reasons being traveling costs going across the country to the west coast. That's just insane. Expect a number of ACC schools to bolt the league because of it. Losing either Carolina or Duke would be devastating to the ACC and losing both, the ACC becomes a different kind of league and not for the better. Some accused former ACC commissioner John Swofford of not doing enough. But Jim Phillips is just doing too much. Its just a big mistake expanding the ACC to the west coast. Plus with new schools on the west coast, the ACC name would have to change to reflect the geographic footprint of the conference.
The Atlantic Coast Conference just added Stanford, Cal, and SMU today. Possibly to get in front of the soon to be departures of FSU, Clemson, and UNC.
Ship is sinking fast.
They really should consider a name change at this point, for various reasons. The most important being that a number of these newer member schools are not even close to the "Atlantic Coast."

Well, I don't think thats a huge priority especially given the inaccuracy of "Big 10" and Big 12". Plus, this whole thing will change again before any signs and business cards could be made, lol.
I don't think geographic or numerical accuracy has mattered for years for many of the conferences. The Pac-12 had a school 1,200 miles from the ocean, the Big 10 has had 14 schools for years and is moving to 18, the Big 12 has 14 schools and will soon have 16, et... You can keep the ACC name and just say it is related to the origin / history of the conference.
IMO Cal, Stanford, and SMU are adds for the other member schools to protect themselves when FSU and Clemson inevitably leave for a conference like the SEC once their lawyers figure it out. Schools like Wake, Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, et. are protecting themselves to still have a viable conference as an option if FSU and Clemson leave at some point. That way they'll still have a conference of ~15 members if they can't get themselves invited to the Big 10, Big 12, or SEC once FSU and Clemson bolt.

12 of the 15 current ACC member schools literally voted Yes, so how can most be against the expansion? Only Florida State, Clemson, and UNC voted no. If the member schools didn't want this... all they had to do was vote no. Nobody forced them to vote yes.

Travel can be somewhat managed, with SMU in the conference you could have Cal/Stanford meet UNC/Duke in Dallas & play double headers in say volleyball, soccer, field hockey, baseball etc.
