Exactly. It's easy to say Atlanta, Houston, LA, etc. really have "bad" traffic. It doesn't change the fact that Greenville has much worse traffic than it should for a city of its size because of poor planning and road design among others.

When it on average takes you over 90 minutes each way to work, commuting from Spartanburg to downtown Greenville, there's a traffic problem, when the drive is less than 30 miles each way. A single accident can drive it even higher depending on how bad it is. Moving closer isn't always an option. As others have noted, poor planning and shoddy construction over the years have added to the problem.

Make gas $10 a gallon and then all of the roads will get fixed. The lights on I-85 will still be broken though.

You may want to sue the USC Upstate "The George" Business School, I don't know what they are teaching folks there.

385 South Closed at 85 all weekend.

From Facebook.
* Special detour for the weekend **
+ Starting at 9 p.m. this Friday, August 23 and ending at 5 am on Monday, August 26, there will be a closure of 385 SB at the 85 interchange to allow for a traffic shift to the new 385 SB bridge over 85.
+ During the closure, traffic on 385 SB will be detoured at Exit 36B to 85 SB, turned around to 85 NB at Mauldin Road (Exit 46C), then directed back to 385 SB at Exit 51B.
+ Drivers are advised to follow all speed limits and traffic markers in the construction zone.

That is a crazy detour - almost 11 extra miles. Using the US-276 interchange only adds 5.5 miles but I guess it might be problematic for trucks. Getting off at Roper Mountain instead would be a lot shorter but would involve Woodruff Rd. traffic.

Having that amount of traffic on the Laurens Rd. cloverleafs would cause a mess, but some people will still use them anyways. They do the same thing on northbound detours where they push traffic to use Highway 14 instead of Pelham to turn around.

It just highlights the fact that the Laurens Rd. and Pelham Rd. interchanges are in bad need of redesign. Another example of those at the county and state level doing a poor job.

The problem with Batesville is being addresses with the current construction that is going on right now. The issues with South Batesville have not even been looked at AFAIK. There were plans on the books to widen South Batesville a few years ago but I can't find them anymore.

While Mauldin Rd is way better suited to handle the traffic than Laurens Rd ever could for the volume that is expected, its still going to be messy there. Lord, I don't want to drive this weekend!
