That was on the opposite side of 85. They didn't want Walmart either but that didn't work out so well as it could not be stopped. How you can allow one and not the other is beyond me and why Thornbladers wouldn't want Target over Walmart?

Yes I remember. I worked at that time at a manufacturer directly across from the site. They had no problem with it. It was the residents that lived close by. I would have rather had a nice retail center if I lived there than what it will eventually become either hotels of more manufacturing or service but that's their loss.
Yeah target has been slated for a few places in the upstate and failed to happen due to people being paid off to stop it or target just being pissy when someone spoiled their announcement plans and they backed out of the deal.
I don't get over there much but are the dark areas on the map new construction or coming soon? and the stores/restaurants listed are the ones coming?
I was over that way just last week. Many if not all of those "dark areas" are already under construction. And, personally, I suspect Collett wouldn't show those businesses unless either contracts or at least letters of intent were already signed.

Target has been stagnant in the region and in store growth for many years. Unfortunately, it is on its way out of Canada, and it may close several stores. As Target and Kmart close doors and stores, Walmart opens them.

Yeah target under the last CEO that just got fired was a mess. I worked for them for 6 months before that joker took over and it was a great 6 months under the guy before him and then he took over and it when to being all about metrics and those stupid redcard quotas and nothing about the team and company image. If you talk to the CEO before him who hand picked this guy he would tell you that he wished he had not done it as the guy was not who he thought he was. I think the company can turn things around but they are going to need to change alot of the things they are doing and start caring about their stores and teams again and so far I'm not seeing that from those I have talked to that I still know.

IMO, adding the grocery section to Target was a bad idea. It took away a lot of floor space and made the other sections smaller. Most people enjoyed shopping at Target over Walmart specifically for the more "openness" of the stores and their wide selection of things for your home.
The "pantry" they had earlier was really enough for most consumers who just needed to pick up some staples such as soda, milk, bread, etc...
If Target wants to enhance its grocery section, it should focus on expanding it into a full supermarket and upgrading the store to a SuperTarget. I do not know how close the Greenville area was or if the idea rose of getting a SuperTarget.
I think the main problem was adding groceries muddied the business focus for Target. Target used to be a place to go and find a better quality of clothes and household items than you could find at Walmart. You paid a bit more but the quality was better. In recent years, it seems that Walmart has improved the quality of their offering a bit while Target has slipped a bit. Now Target offers products that are still more expensive than Walmart while offering little in the way of better quality.
In reading about how they handled their Canadian expansion, "disaster" seems to be an apt word. That combined with their credit card issue a year or so ago have hampered the chain quite a bit. I would be surprised to see much expansion anywhere for Target in the near future. The upstate could support additional stores in Easley/Powdersville, Travelers Rest / Cherrydale, and several other locations but I doubt we see any additional locations any time soon.
