Like Katy is abandoned but so is the majority of the county because there’s less officers per capita in HCSO than basically any police organization that’s supposed to protect more than 1,000,000 people. Like with nearly the same population as Chicago, HCSO has like 1/5th the officers. Houston PD has like under 1/2 the officers.
I started keeping track of the number of HCSO on each shift some years ago. The number of cops on the street has always been far below the suggested rate since the 1970. The county has never fully funded the HCSO. Contract deputies may be unfair but it's all we can do within the current system. And if there is need, they can leave their contracted subdivision to do whatever they need to be doing.

This is a perfect example of why Harris County judicial system is a complete mess.

Many areas are currently abandoned by HCSO. My Mom lives in Katy, and response times for HCSO there are measured in days.
It's disgusting that crime in the areas are in such a state that they have a need to consider this in the first place. The action to solve a safety issue, however, IMHO is a good use of resources.

Not sure what seems to be the problem with Harris county Jail, but it needs to be address asap.

25 deaths last year and we're already at 3 for 2023.

Update, we’re at 4 for the year. Are we still blaming Covid?

Good news...the FBI announces an investigation into all of the deaths at Harris county jail. I'm hopeful something will come out of this.

In other news, crime has been trending upwards lately...

The link you posted shows homicides are down relative to 2021 by 12.5%. Of course they are all higher than pre-pandemic but that is true almost everywhere.

"However, the murder rate over the last 12 months is up 3.4% compared to the annual average over the last four years, and the frequency of killings remains higher than it was before the pandemic."

Other than robbery and theft, every other category of crime in 2022 was down in comparison to 2021. Your statement “crime has been trending up lately” is just false according to your source. Even homicides in 2022 are down from 2021. Of course homicides are still higher than pre pandemic times, and like As Above So Below said this is happening pretty much everywhere in the country.
