Trick or Treating usually starts around six and winds down by 9:00 or 9:30. The littlest ones are usually out the earliest.
Elle, I'm glad we don't share your tradition of telling bad jokes. I usually get "trick or treat" or just a terrified stare.
(The sadistic parents love seeing their kids get scared. LOL)

One dad last year of a boy of about 8 years of age said " We come to this house every year and at first he wont go up the walkway, but then he wants to come back three times."
Yeah I usually decorate, play scary music, and hand out treat bags where they get several candies and a small toy or stickers or something. Last year I lost the spirit when someone stole the pumpkin from my steps 10 minutes after I bought it, but the ex really wanted to hand out candy so we did.

This year I didnt decorate at all; in fact I put a FREE ad in CL and gave away all of my Halloween stuff.

Back in the late 50's, back in my neighborhood in Rochester, MN, just about everybody had their lights on, and passing out candy, because back then a number of kids carried soap, me included, and those that didn't pass out candy got punished, a little: soap on the windows! Some even strung toilet paper over their bushes for punishment!

There used to be a Jehova Witness family, with kids, up the street, who refused to partake in Halloween (against their religion?) and their kids would be stationed outside their house, to ward off us soapers!
So we'd distract one, another would rush up to the house, smear a little soap on a window, and run like crazy! We worked as a team!

It surprises me today, these kids today, they're so scarily passive! I've even mentioned this story to a few of the kids that come to my door, and they're either shocked or amused by the story I tell them!

So relax! With the mindset of the young today, they're never going to be revolutionaries!

^^ They might be revolutionaries someday when the grid goes down, and the XBox and IPhones don't work anymore.

I wasn't worried about soaping or TPing, the neighborhood kids are afraid of me.

And yes, it is against the Jehovah's Witness religion to partake in any holiday, including birthdays or Christmas.
