One hundred miles at sea. No moon. Then you see the stars. Turn out all the running lights on the boat. A jacket over the instruments. Wait a while...then you see the stars.

When the milky way is bright enough to walk on...then you see the stars.

Only once on Land. At Covered Bridge Camp Grounds outside of Louisville KY One night 55 years ago or so...it clicked. That was the first time I saw the milky way.

And it is amazing when you realize the light of the boat about to overrun you is Venus. And you really believed it for a few minutes.

Orion threatens and points the way.

Nah landlubbers seldom see the stars.

The only time I love a cold beer...first light well at sea...toast to venus.

The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it." — Cormac McCarthy (The Road)

"Listen to me, he said, when your dreams are of some world that never was or some world that never will be, and you're happy again, then you'll have given up. Do you understand? And you can't give up, I won't let you."
Cormac McCarthy (The Road)

Just slay me.....

I should mention this is the only McCarthy book that I've read so far. But I plan on reading more...

What I liked the best about The Road was it felt like I was tapping into someones thought...streaming.

Man...I really felt that book...I think I had tears running down my face the entire time! Such angst..passion, and longing for his child to live in a better world. To be the good guys...ahhh....time to read it again!

Sorry...got carried away!
The Road just wasn't my style. I mean...Get to the point already!

To each his own, indeed. I love debating books, though

I had been searching for a used copy of "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy and found it a week ago at Savers for $3. I expect to like it like Lyra did, since I think that we have similar minds. It's on my June reading list, along with 11 others.

I never read the book, but I saw the movie. It is very depressing.

Disregard all my hype about the book...lower your expectations!

I hope you like it. It's very, very dark. But I love the world he created...and the what if's that were raised in my mind...and the exploration into human nature.

Although I loved the movie...I think it's a shell in comparison to the book. The appeal of the book is the stream of thought from the main character. You pretty much get to see what is in his head. I love that aspect of the story...and you just don't get that kind of dimension in the movie. Sure the theme is depressing and dark...but it creates a black canvas to paint the stellar example of a fathers love for his son...that shines in all that darkness.

If a book was ever described as Goth...this would be it...

Yeah, but although it's nice during the day, at night some of those Indi...Native Amer... Diné, might just scalp you.

We camped there one night in the RV Park behind the Trading Post. Don't remember the stars, but I remember going to the mini-mart, and there was an "elder" member of the tribe who had had a few too many beers, and he wasn't pleased with seeing a white eyes in there. The other people told me to ignore him though, so I did.

Are you kidding me? The man is freakin genius. That style is hard to do and get it right. He makes you feel like you're there, and his understanding of how cowboys talk is amazing.

We saw the movies, "No Country For Old Men", and "All The Pretty Horses", so we bought "The Border Trilogy" on Amazon. It will take me a while to finish all that.

We had rented "The Road", but it was so depressing we couldn't finish watching it, so I probably won't read the book.

Lyra33, here's something I bet you'd love, but you might have to make reservations and buy event tickets before the end of summer (after they announce next year's dates). It's a world class event in a maybe not world class town, but Elko is pretty nice as small western cow towns go. Couple of great Basque restaurants there.

The Western Folklife Center

The Basque Festival is probably worth seeing once, but it doesn't hold a candle to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering.

National Basque Festival

Elko is pretty warm in summer, although in Northern Nevada you could get snow in July some years, but it is freezing cold in winter, so dress accordingly.
