Also a huge and unfair income tax for living in the city of Philly. (So most of it is a ghetto full of residents on the dole, not workers.)

In my line of work, a funny thing happened over the last 10 years. THe compensation for my skillset rose in many areas outside of the northeast. Sure, it's still tough landng the big bucks elsewhere, but it's more possible today than ever before.

And in my case, that annual property tax savings will be more like $13-15k. Multiply that by 10 years and you have yourself a nice nestegg going on.

But can we keep this on the QT? I'm hoping to find a buyer for my way overtaxed abode.
If it's not a dump, you will find one in a reasonable amount of time for your way overpriced and overtaxed home, judging by the people I know selling and buying homes. People are always taking the plunge on LI.

It all evens out folks. Move where it makes you happy and quit disparaging other people's choices.
Exactly! TY!

On Long Island I didn't have that option because I was not only scraping by to fund my retirement, but I was being forced to fund the early and lavish retirements of well-connected public sector workers. That train ticket that your employer helps subsidize also always goes up because again you are helping fund the retirements and disability schemes of other people. And with employers there is never a free lunch. That extra subsidy is going to be made up in some other way whether it is greater stress, work load, or time at the office.
That would be if you are making the same money you did on LI. A longshot.

But I have to admit the "public sector" part of your post is spot on. And that is one of the few things I dislike about living here.

There was probably a time when it mattered to me that everyone had their facts straight and were convinced I moved to nirvana. That time has passed for me and I hope it eventually does for you as well.
Now that would be the ultimate punishment for him!

Judging by how often this topic is regurgitated, for some whack jobs on here it never does. If only they could find a hobby in their new location!

These are anonymous boards littered with misinformation, bias, and just plain not nice people. The LI "regulars" are as mean or caustic as any forum I've read at CD. The faux outrage at people coming back here blasting LI is laughable. There are next to no LI living regulars here worth reading anymore, so what would we read without these types of discussions?

NJ and NY continue to lead in OUTBOUND migrations... 65 and 64 percent. When way more people are leaving a place, the general consensus will surely have a negative slant.
wah wah wah. was someone mean to you once? grow up.

I make about 20% less, but my house is cheaper (paid off), and my health/auto/home insurance is significantly less. That along with the $10,000 I am saving in property taxes makes me feel so much better off even though I am making less. I also work less (no weekends), so I am thinking about investing in a little trailer RV to explore all the wonderful parks and National Parks in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia this summer. Why suffer and wait until you are 65 to live, when you can enjoy a little retirement right in your prime years right on the weekend.

So why do you keep bouncing back onto the LI forum then if we're that boring? Or is where you ended up that boring that you have to keep reading the LI forum to have something to do?

seriously doubt this person ever owned anything on LI or anywhere else before moving.
