1) Grieve your taxes

2) Not happy with result you can request Mediation with the Assessor

3) Not Happy with that you can file a Small Claims Assessment Review which is Judicial and you pay a $30 dollar court fee to get a docket, take the day off from work and go to Court

Last year was first time I got to step 3.

I have been to step 2 twice.

When you get to step 3 two years in a row and lose at that point give up grieving for a few years.

Services - do you get twice a week garbage pickup, same week pot-hole repair, etc.? I do. Towns are all different, but so are the taxes.

Besides, salaries are higher to make up for the higher taxes, right? And you're missing the bigger picture. How about a convenience charge of being here next to everything and having everything?
Unfortuneatly, school districts that are not known as desired now have property taxes over 10k on LI. I'm in Centereach and my 19yo, three bedroom, no living room house is 10.6k. Next year it'll be 11.4 and the year after, 12k.

I'm seriously thinking about leaving too, since I make my own pizza and rarely eat bagels.

Just do it. It is beautiful here. The sky is blue, the snow has just fallen, and I am going to do a little cross country skiing in the local park tomorrow, not be slaving away late in some office just to pay $10,000 more in property taxes every year.

With that in mind, you'd have a lot more credibility if you were objective with everything instead of just naming the positives. How's the food options, nearby family, sanitation, sports/entertainment, internet options, schools, salaries, etc.
I found this rather funny since we also went to Hawaii for two weeks last summer, and we all (husband and two teens) could not wait to get home. I thought we had something wrong with us.

Ugh. You and your parks. Where do you live, the merry old land of Oz? Wow, cross country skiing in the magical free park. Sounds like a complete yawn fest! Happy trails, kemo-sab-ay!

One area that I think DE beats the TNH by a country mile in. I pay $63 a quarter for my garbage service, and I have a 96 gallon trash container on wheels. Pick up is once a week, if I need a second container I can get one. The recycle container is slightly smaller and it gets picked up every other week. The driver is the only one on the truck. The truck has an arm that picks the container up and dumps it into the truck and returns it to the place it was. Nothing is ever falling out on to the street as the arm keeps the top of the garbage container closed until it is turned over the truck. Bulk pickup you have to call for and they will pick up on a specified day. Here is the best part. There are recycle containers, (think dumpsters) at several locations that you can get rid of large cardboard boxes or anything recyclable in nature so you don't have to wait for a pickup if you don't want. In the TNH, my garbage was picked up 3 times a week and recycle once per week. There were always a minimum of a driver plus one guy on the truck.

Now, you may say doesn't the garbage smell? I honestly have not had that problem with my garbage but I can't say for sure that others have not. The good news, the tax savings. Now, that will never happen in TNH because "the contracts call for 3 times per week pickup". Honestly, how many people actually generate that much garbage that it needs to be picked up that often? There are only 3 holidays that garbage is not picked up Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. The routes are done the next day. All other days the office is closed but regular garbage collection is done. MLK, Good Friday, Memorial day, July 4th, Labor day. I would love to see this one fly in TNH!!!!

Aside from the taxes, my gripe about living on LI is the gymnastics you have to go thru to get anywhere (off the island). I hate it. However, there are many pros. Leaving LI is a difficult decision.
