Don't compare Michigan to Katrina that's foolish. Not everyone works construction or auto jobs. The health care , tourism, and recreation industrys are growing here. Dow chemical and corning are growing in the alternative energy fields. And some people actually like it here. If you don't then move, and stop complaining so much.

Don't forget that automotive and construction can and does affect the entire state. Even the west side of the state. My company (auto supplier) has businesses all over the state (entire world for that matter). So if they are doing bad, laying off etc then the cities/towns of its employees stop putting money into the economy by their reduced spending. They hesistate before buying houses (such as myself), so new ones are not built. There goes the construction jobs. And I am not even talking manufacturing. Where are all the thousands of big three manufacturing employees supposed to go? Medical? service? Everyone is slowing their spending, causing everything to slow. And now we are saturating the market with unemployed. Its big news when some company moves to michigan and opens up 200 jobs. We need tens of thousands of jobs.

A nice little downward circle that will eventually bottom out. Hopefully it will be over soon. But it might take years to recover. Most likely as others have posted it will be medical or some other technical field. Larger companies (including mine) are making their money overseas nowadays. They are investing overseas.

I am just hanging on for the ride

Default Las Vegas is a nice place to live.

I don't know where Magellan ventured, but Las Vegas is a very nice and liveable place. Sure, there are crappy sections, just like Michigan has. I just have to defend this place. We have been out here 10 yrs. and living is good. Our jobs pay well, we have a nice house and new cars. I am thrilled we moved here from Maine, where the taxes and snow were killing us. Jobs are not hard to find and everyone does say, "if you can't find a job, you weren't looking".

dpreston - I believe Michigan lead in foreclosures
As of January 29th, Michigan was #3 after Nevada #1 and Florida #2:

Hot Property Foreclosures filings accelerating in several states - BusinessWeek

But actually Michigan's foreclosures are not accelerating, but slowing down a bit (68% over 2006). Many states have begun to accelerate. Nevada's was 215% over 2006, Florida's 124%, California 238%, Arizona 150%, Maryland, 455%, Mass 161%.

The sub-metro of Detroit/Livonia/Dearborn lead the country in foreclosures for 2007, as a percentage of total homes (4.918%), followed closely by a bunch of California metro areas, Las Vegas, Cleveland, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, etc.:

DETROIT, STOCKTON, LAS VEGAS POST HIGHEST 2007 METRO FORECLOSURE RATES

Charlotte was #32 out of the top 100 metros for foreclosures, ICYYW dpreston.

Haha! What timing Maven. Good for you.

I was posting links rebutting the two previous posts.

Any other questions?

Yes, if two michiganders are walking along a road, and a hubcap falls of a car, how many bones are in a tin can?
