It would be nice to have direct rail service to the Philly Zoo instead of having to drive all the time. Do you personally think that area would be better served by the subway instead of regional rail?
Regional rail would be cheaper and make more sense since there are regional rail lines already there.

That's not true as alot of condos in Asia are atop of malls. But usually these are located on high-end retail malls.
No one would like to live atop of an area, where alot of hoodlums congregate. (don't get me wrong, I love the Gallery - it's just some of the people there)

205 Race Street:

Article on this today from PlanPhilly. Looks like this may end up being taller. OCCA is still having a hissy-fit about it.

Quote:
According to Squilla and Greenberger, the developers have negotiated with Keystone since withdrawing their zoning application earlier this year, and have agreed to make some changes to the design. The project will keep 128 residential units, but the portion fronting on Race Street will be lowered, according to Squilla, and the tower will be slightly raised. Greenberger said the design changes will—and our fingers resist even transcribing the phrase—“open up the view corridor to the billboard.”

Representatives of Brown Hill Development and their attorney were not immediately available for comment. An attorney for Keystone Outdoor Advertising could not be reached Tuesday morning.

Richard Thom, chair of Old City Civic Association’s developments committee, said it isn’t about how nice the design of the project is—he likes it—but about the purpose of zoning.

More Wynn Casino info

Quote:
More than 200 Fishtown residents heard a pitch Monday night for a Steve Wynn casino on a 60-acre parcel on the Delaware River. Most of them liked what they heard: 173 voted to support the proposal, and 55 voted against it.
Quote:
· A 60-acre resort and casino, including 22 acres of public space along the river, three times as much as Penn Treaty Park

· 300 hotel rooms in a 300-foot tower, no room smaller than 900 square feet

· Restaurants, nightclubs, maybe an ice skating rink—the gaming and non-gaming components will be separated, Wynn representatives said

· Green roofing, water features, “cutting-edge horticulture”

· An estimated 3,600 construction jobs over two years, plus 2,200 permanent jobs—a total investment of $925 million.

“Philly, in our view, should take a great view of being selected by one of the premier developers in the world for a resort,” Terry McKenna said.

Wynn is also pursuing an urban casino in Boston, Annie Allman said. She said the company is prepared to develop both projects.

Looks like Blatstein's plans for the vacant lots behind the Grocery store at Girard and next to the Piazza should be moving along relatively shortly.

Quote:
What about the build-out of the two additional apartment buildings planned at Piazza? I asked? "I still own that land," along with the building where his Tower Investments offices are located, Blatstein said. at the Piazza. When will he build more? "I'm looking at it now. The market here is very hot. This neighborhood is on fire. Even across Girard Ave north, everything's being sold."

Insightful and critical look at the city's employment and tax issues: Job losses haunt the city

Certainly a challenge if the city is to maintain its momentum.

A park or BRT for the City Branch of the old Reading Viaduct? Looks like they are suggesting the two can coexist side by side... why not some sort of light rail or tram car? Like the Riverline in NJ or the Tram cars along the Boardwalks at the shore? I think that would be a pretty cool form transit that can take people to the museums.

This article is pretty inaccurate, but what else do you expect from Philly.com? The city is no longer bleeding jobs, and has actually been gaining jobs the past 2 or 3 years. A couple of pretty big firms have moved to the city or announced plans to do so, as well, the hospitals and universities have been booming and adding jobs at a pretty rapid clip. I agree the city needs to do a better job of attracting even MORE jobs, but the author of the article needs to look at more recent statistics, because his article is laughably incorrect.

Good news. Realen Properties is planing to build phase two of the Edgewater Apartments at the corner of 23rd and Summer Streets in the Logan Square neighborhood. The development will go on the surface lot on the corner and will contain 250 units in what looks like a 24 floor tower.

Here is a preliminary mock up of what the tower could look like:

Realen is meeting with the LSNA tomorrow to discuss the project:
