This is what I've been thinking the whole time. It has little to no bearing on the OPs life so why does he care???

This thread has 2600 views and 80 replies in 2 just weeks. It is obviously of interest to a lot of people, not just me. You, a city dweller I presume, could have started the thread but you didn't. My hunch is you are uncomfortable with the issue and hoped to sweep it under the rug.

I'm waiting to see how it shakes out, as I mentioned in the VERY first post after yours.

Again, why are you arguing with people over a tax that doesn't affect you?

I have a feeling this tax wouldn't have had a chance if it were simply a money grab to fill city coffers.
My (vague) recollection is that the idea first surfaced in the last year of the Nutter administration, and when it did, it was discussed in purely public-health terms, as a way to attack the obesity epidemic or something like that.

Whether or not it was, though, wrapping the idea in education made it easier for Council to swallow. (If my memory is correct, however, the fact that it was Nutter proposing it probably didn't help with Council either.)

There is a precedent for "sin taxes" being pushed through as a way to look after the kids. There's a 10 percent tax on liquor by the drink in this city. That was enacted during the Street administration; proceeds from that tax go to the School District. It was promoted for that purpose from the day it was first suggested.

That's 10 percent tax on liquor and beer. At Eulogy they print the tax out on your check.

Polar bears, nuclear disarmament and world hunger don't affect me either but I have occasionally opined on them.

Why is Philly providing free pre-school and using this ''sugar tax'' as a means to do it?

When dining out within city limits it'll be "Two glasses of water, please!" (We usually drink water with meals, anyway.)

Yep. I order either water, hot tea, or coffee.
