Then there was a Kool-Aid competitor, Funny Face, that had to reformulate in the late 60s, and replaced the cyclamates with saccharine. Remember Goofy Grape and Choo-Choo Cherry? For that matter, remember Chinese Cherry?

How about Fizzies? Anyone remember them?? The little tablet that made a glass of carbonated beverage? I thought they were horrible! I do remember Goofy Grape but wasn't that kool aid or something? Can't remember exactly lol just know that I remember something.

I believe the area is flood irrigated which would make those trees grow to their gigantic size. Next step is to find ownership with county assessor's aerial maps.
Here the place is, southwest corner of Ocotillo and 14th Place. One of the pools has been filled in, it was where the vacant area is near the corner. I guess not a country club, no golf course, just a private club. I went with a friend in 1954, his father belonged to a lot of clubs because he sold air conditioners and clubs were where the money was.
How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-cc.jpg

Anyone remember the dirt berm (flood control) that ran along the north side of Bell Rd. west and east of Scottsdale Rd? Everybody would go out there to use it for a backstop to sight their guns in for hunting season and just to plink. Pima road was dirt beyond Bell Rd. until you hit Pinnacle Peak road. We hunted quail and rabbits where Desert Highlands and Troon golf courses are now.
It was a great place to sight guns. I used to fly out of Scottsdale Airport (learned there in 1977, right after it got a tower and was still 4800' long) and north of the berm there was NOTHING. Unfortunately some mouthbreathers used to think it was OK to use that area as a place for wildcat dumps. Oh, yeah, and the boondockers, as mentioned on page 319.

Goofy Grape was the flagship of Funny Face. Chinese Cherry changed to Choo Choo Cherry in the mid sixties due to sensitivity issues. The depiction of the cherry WAS quite stereotypical, and I can see how someone might be offended, certainly today, but even then back in the 60s. See Funny Face for other examples.

I wonder how many frat boys ate a whole slew of Fizzies just to see what would happen. The belch heard 'round the world?

I found it, the place was called the Phoenix Executives Club at 5905 North 14th Place; curious they didn't use the Ocotillo street for an address, it would be more impressive. Looking at the satellite image, from Google Earth, maybe the second pool is the rectangular area between two buildings.

Biltmore Fashion Park use to be nice until the big money sucked the life out of it.......remember "Observer" this is how I remember Phoenix...not you! Half the shops are closed or have been taken down.

I had to go back and look up the old post. I go to a meeting there regularly, I don't see "half the shops empty" I see one new one going in to the west end, but as I said in the earlier post, I haven't walked the whole thing recently. I'll make a point to do that the next time I'm there. But that's not "remembering", either way, that's different perceptions of how it is now.

I liked it better before the expansion, so I think we agree on that point.
