I remember my first airline trip in 69 and walking out on the tarmac at terminal 1 to the rear stairs in the back of a 727. I'm sure it was Frontier Airlines at that time that took us to Denver. Was it Bonanza Airlines or Air West that were yellow and was owned by Howard Hughes. They said their computer computers were so messed up on the first day they flew that the company people had to run out to the plane and ask them where they had come from? Anyone remember that in the early 70's I believe.

It was Hughes Airwest Donalumni that had the yellow DC-9's that looked like flying banannas. Howard Hughes was the guy behind it.

If you looked in the phone book for AirWest, it instructed you to see, "Hughes AirWest." My first flight was an American Airlines round trip from Phoenix to Dallas and back to see my Dad about 1966 before being inducted into the Army and shortly after that to Viet Nam. Flying was such a classy thing then, not at all like the Greyhound bus experience it is now. People dressed up to fly; now they wear flip flops and smelly clothes. I can remember the names of a couple of songs I heard on the astro-stereo on that night flight and how beautiful the lights of Phoenix and Dallas were. "Look Around," by Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66, and "Sometimes when we touch," by Dan Hill. I think maybe the world was a better place then.

During the 50's there was a very small country club in an odd place, Ocotillo and 14th Place. They had a restaurant and two swimming pools. I met a pretty girl there once and was very impressed until we found a June Bug on the deck and she said, "Let's pull its legs off."

I can't find the name of the place but the remnants are still there with the several small houses that were along the perimeter drive; I think employees lived in those.

Roosevelt, what a memory that is! If the remnants are still there, couldn't you just work backwards with property ownerships. Go to recorded docs at Maricopa.gov and see who sold it to who. Some of the early owners probably are also in the articles of incorporation which would be recorded. Now for the rest of the story, did you tell the pretty girl you'd like to pull the legs off the poor bug? I'm going to look at Google Earth to find some remnants or a carnage of bug legs.

Not doubting a country club was near by, but are you sure of the location?

I checked historicaerials.com and from the looks, in 1958, a boatload of citrus trees but nada in the golf course category.

These are two images, one set farther than the other.

While searching, I found the Orange Tree CC, which at one time, was the Century CC, at 56th St and Shea.

How do you remember Phoenix? Stories from long time residents...-country-club.jpgThis area looks like it could be the private club. I wonder what's with the empty pool. Note the little half-circle drive. The drive appears to branch to the left into the trees. I believe the area is flood irrigated which would make those trees grow to their gigantic size. Next step is to find ownership with county assessor's aerial maps.
