there are two Facebook pages that the AZ people might be interested in. Some may already know about it. They are You Know You Are From Arizona When... and You Know You Are From Phoenix When... Both really interesting.

Remember the beautiful Japanese flower gardens on East Baseline Road? This old postcard shows just a small portion of them at the height of their popularity.

My sister found this recently, from 1969. Asking Grandma would not have worked in my home. She thought Wallace and Ladmo were just stupid and nonsensical which made them all the cooler to us kids.

I remember them very well. I think my grandmother spent a LOT of money at the flower stands. They were so beautiful, who could resist? I miss them. And the orange groves...

This is probably not of much interest because it is so long ago. National Bank on Washington and Central before the later remodel. Probably the only car in Phoenix was parked in front. A portion of the Commercial Hotel is to the right, later the Luhrs Hotel. The city wanted Luhrs to install fire escapes and he said it would cost too much and tore it down.

Roosevelt, it's of interest partially because it was so long ago. Thanks for sharing!

From Wikipedia: "Miss Genie" deLuise hosted the Denver area Romper Room between 1962 and 1972 on KWGN-TV (which was KCTO at the time). Denver's Miss Genie deLuise was also the Romper Room hostess in Phoenix from fall of 1957 to March 1959.

I went to school with the daughter of one of the owners. A combination of rising real estate prices and the desire of the families for their children to have better lives meant gradually fewer and fewer flower farms.

They were glorious, though. In the days before the I-10 passing through Phoenix, we had to drive along Baseline to get to Buckeye and then down to Gila Bend when we made our annual summer hadj to San Diego. My folks left early in the morning to avoid the heat, and I always associate the intoxicating smell of all those blossoms entering the car as the sun rose and we drove past...
