For us kids, Bert Easley's Fun Shop was the Holy Grail.

Bert Easley, before he built the building on McDowell, was located inside the Phoenix city bus terminal on 2nd Ave. and Washington. He was quite a character, he manned the booth by himself. The other side of the terminal had lots of pinball machines. There was also Playland on Washington between Central and 1st Street. They had all kinds of arcade machines and some Mutoscope peep shows, or 'penny a peep', that were banned for kids but we put in our penny anyway and started cranking. I got caught once but gave the policeman a friend's name and address.

Anyone remember your favorite stores as a kid here?
My world evolved around Papago Plaza on Scottsdale and McDowell. It had Mayman's Toys and hobbies, 31 Flavors, Green Stamp redemption center at one time and a TG&Y. Everything a kid could want in life. Los Arcos Mall was still just a vacant field. Alas, Los Arcos is gone and some stupid looking thing is there now. What is it anyways? Last time I was in town I drove by and couldn't figure out what it was.

I almost forgot about the penny arcade by the Fox theater. Went there with my big brother a couple of times and boy do I remember those crank machines, only I didn't know what they were called. Definitely not what you'd call wholesome family entertainment.

That was the location of K-Mart. Govway was on Indian School and 38th Ave. I don't know if they had a second store.

There was also a few Hudson Discount Stores. Also Big-K had 3 stores.

didn't The Arizona Bank have the kachina mascot?....I think there is still a bank building on Scottsdale Road around Lincoln or McDonald that was an Arizona Bank back then, now another bank, but the classic kachina remains in stained glass in front

Pima Savings, mostly based in Tucson, was a victim of the S and L scandals of the late 1980s, though I don't think they were really a victim....just another S and L that got greedy.....

remember Western Savings and its trademark architecture?....many of those distinctive buildings remain in the state.....the old Driggs family of Arizona ran Western and also got a bit cocky and greedy, I think....

All true. Pima may have used a Kachina, too, but I don't remember.
