Here is another interesting article from Phoenix Magazine that gives the background of Cloud 9.

this is a picture of the original phx muni stadium at 1st street and mohave. built in the 1930's for a series of class c and d minor league teams either called the stars or senetors. in 1958 the san fransisco seals moved to phx due to the giants leaving new york to relocate to san francisco. they played through the 1959 season when the team left for tacoma wa. in the early 60's plans were made for the ballpark on van buren and 64th st. in 1966 the team returned to the new ball park and stayed untill the d-backs came into being. the 1958 team included willie mcovey, one of the alou brothers and if you are a real baseball fan you will recognize the name of ernie broglio. my father said you could park in the downtown area and a bus would take you to the ballpark. i went to the stadium once in 59 but was only 3 and dont remember. spent many summer eves at the updated phx muni growing up and loved every minute.

old phx muni on 1st st and mohave, built in 30's for senetors and stars. 58 and 59 the original phx giants played there.

would love to find a complete history of the old phx muni. can anyone help?

We used to play Aggravation so much my buddy Greg made his own board out of a piece of counter-top. We took it everywhere. Loved that game. Forgot all about it. Thanks!

getting off the Phx theme, but the Apache Tears cave was just SW of Superior behind the airport...it's private property and is now closed to people like us.....is a perlite mine now, I think.....

we dug for Apache Tears in the late 70s there....great family project...then took them home and threw them in the rock polisher/tumbler for a couple days!

things i think i remember but not sure: parades on 1st street not central, palm trees in the center of central, the cloud nine sign looked like a pale blue cloud, a theater for plays behind west high, an italian rest on van buren or wash east of 48th street but west of tempe(good food), sky harbor had hotels on the airport property, there were houses between mill and the university, a parking lot at van buren and central next to a gas station, the curve on tatum(before being widened) seemed to have a huge drop off and we tested our guts at seeing how fast we could take that turn, 1/4 mile marked off on sweetwater between 35th and 43rd aves for drag racing and a shooting range somewhere between west phx and luke afb.

Nice postcard of Sky Harbor I haven't seen before. The back says it cost $5 million to build.
