REALLY missing my favorite Mexican food place in Iowa. It was run by a "gringo" but everyone else in the family run business spoke Spanish (cuz THAT makes them Mexican food experts-lol). ANY WAY, they make the salsa fresh daily, the chips were fresh, our favorite bartender made his own special margarita and the cheese sauce was some out of this world concoction that was not just melted white cheddar.
Is there any place like this in the valley?

Some of my favorites when I was living in Phoenix:

Carolina's - 12th St and Mojave, Phx - really excellent food and they make their own tortillas, atmosphere and neighborhood are not as awesome, but dang their food is good. They also have a location up north (near Cave creek Rd?) but haven't tried

Garcia's - I used to go to the one off Warner in south Tempe all the time - good food and atmosphere, several locations

Original Burrito Company - Elliott Rd in Ahwatukee - just a quick service place that serves up some pretty dang good tacos and burritos (at least when I was there)

Blue Agave - Off Mayo Blvd in north Scottsdale - great atmosphere, excellent salsa, overall really good food. Not to be confused with...

Blue Adobe Grille - on N. Country Club in Mesa, more Southwestern, really, but really excellent food in West Mesa.

It was in Cedar Rapids, Casa Las Glorias. When we went there for the last time the owner Kent stopped at our table and we explained that we were moving to AZ. He expressed his sorrow for losing us as regulars and when we went to pay the bill he had comped our food! THAT'S the kind of place we are looking for.

My place I am looking for here is like El Rodeo in Des Moines, which is much like you described. They also have the amazing cheese dip, house made salsa that is always great, and the margaritas can be ordered by the pitcher (for only $15) and they are always perfect! (actually have alcohol, not too sweet, etc)

The closest I have found so far is Casa Ramos on Main in Mesa. Went there last night and had the best fajitas I have ever had. They give you a small bottle of salsa with the bowls which is also nice, because I like to dip chips AND put it on my food. Pretty sure the tortillas were homemade. I've yet to have a bad meal there.

I am just curious. If the original poster is still monitoring this thread; where did you end up going for Mexican food? Was it everything you hoped it would be?

Cheese dip and fajitas?

You aren't looking for Mexican Food at all!

That said, Fajitas on Dunlap/ I17 is or was pretty good.

I like Juans on 16th St and Thomas; Mi Patio; Rosita's Place on McDowell; Morenos in Mesa/Chandler; and TC Taco in Tempe.
