It's likely those Preppers and Survivalists who are always talking about being ready for a day when the "Sh** Hits The Fan"

The media can be full of, well... you know, in their sensational reporting, so these folks might want to place some in their ears...

Naw, its not THOSE people. Preppers/survivalists(and I have to say Mormons) already have all that stuff.
Those type of people are the ones sitting back who will say "I told you so" and barricading their doors.

The ones at Costco are the bored ignorant people who want excitement in their lives....(and a clean rear end. lol)....so they believe everything the news says and hope that some disease is going to wipe everybody out.

Which would seem to run contra to a good Dystopian Defense Plan.

Since it is new, there is not a confirmed treatment of vaccine.

What paranoid people are not recognizing is that there is not evidence of community spread. Nearly all cases with the exception of a few have a direct person to person contact as a source for the virus. The flu, on the other hand, has communicable spread.

If people are paranoid, the best things they can do is limit their travel (airplanes have confined space with recirculated air), avoid places with high density populations (amusement parks) and avoid locations with reported case numbers. Also, hand washing and avoiding touch face, eyes and nose will help.

I work for a large company with offices in China. We've been pretty thoroughly debriefed on it. We are not traveling to and from Asia at this time to minimize exposure and spread. But the paranoia is unfortunate. There is no reason for people to stockpile toilet paper and water.

What surprises me is the paranoid types tend to be the same people who don't vaccinate themselves or their children. That would scare me far more than getting coronavirus. There have been measles outbreaks in the United States, thanks to people who don't believe in vaccines.

In a strange way, I feel lucky we live in Arizona. They believe heat may impact the virus from spreading. Well, we live in the hottest place in the country. I'm sure even the negative people who proliferate this forum complaining about the heat will find that to be a positive....or maybe not

And he had traveled to Wu han city and self-reported when he came down with symptoms. I know you aren't making this claim but for others reading this, they should be aware, he was not a random person who came down with the virus.

You might be surprised to find out the flu vaccine effectiveness on average over the last 15 years has only been 39% effective. If you look at this CDC chart of Adjusted overall % I took those numbers and averaged them. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-wor...estimates.html

I still get the vaccine but have had better results with just hand washing.

The death toll (now mostly Chinese) are much higher for MALES or 2.8% versus 1.7% for females. i.e., independent of your age, if you are a male you have a 2.8% chance of dying. But it is important to note that Chinese males smoke much more than women and could be skewing the higher fatality results. According to https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6546632/, 52% of Chinese men smoke while only 2.7% among Chinese women currently have the habit. One might deduce that if you smoke, it's time to buy some more Costco TP and water in order to lock yourself up for a couple of years. Most importantly, don't forget to stock up on some cigarettes!

China also does not boast the same access to healthcare that the United States does. If someone gets sick in China, what are his or her chances of having access to a decent hospital and being admitted and treated? Their hospitals are so overwhelmed and there are not enough of them given their high population. In the United States and especially Arizona, you have the luxury of having access to multiple large hospitals, most of which are tertiary with level 1 trauma capabilities. It's a luxury most of us take for granted.

There has been some suggestion that the virus will struggle and possibly fade out when warmer weather reaches the northern hemisphere. That begs the question whether we are better off here in the crucible of America. The reality is probably not. We always have one of the worst flu experiences in the country. It comes early, hits harder, and lasts longer - well past the warming of temps in March. The constant influx of tourists is likely to blame. But maybe the bigger reason is that year-round desert Arizonans are in confined spaces with air conditioning units that are recirculating contaminated air. If we all lived in tents outside or shut off the ac in the shopping centers, restaurants, and malls we might benefit by the toxicity of our sunlight and warm air on the virus. As it is, we are probably creating greater risk this summer than other parts of the US where people will be outside enjoying the summer.

Effectiveness is with respect to not getting it at all.

There is still the benefit of getting reduced symptoms after a vaccine due to partial immunity. It would mean the difference between mild symptoms and a 101 fever vs 103 and worse symptoms.

I think the toilet paper thing is because people are afraid they will be holed up in their houses for awhile and don't want to run out of the essentials.

Honestly I think these people have been watching too much Walking Dead. It's not the zombie apocalypse, folks. Calm down. In the meantime, I think I'll go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over.

Oh, it wasn't just "people". Our school system stocked up on duct tape so that teachers could duct tape the MANY windows in our building in case of attack. Most of our classrooms had a near wall of windows.

A team of specialists went out to each school to go over emergency measures. We were told that the very first thing to do in case of a gas or biologic attack on our school would be to shut off the HVAC system since that would suck in air from the outside. Made sense. Perhaps our building was a bit odd due to its age, but to get into the room where the HVAC was controlled you had to exit the building and go into the HVAC room from and outside door. The head custodian asked, "Well who would do that if we were under attack?" You should have seen his face when they said, "You, Mr. Building Supervisor".
