I think society regulated sexual behavior in the past more strictly first and foremost for practical reasons, secondly, because society was far more male dominant than it is today. if a woman makes informed choices than there is little risk. everyone these days could be a bit more picky, though.

I think MEN standing up to guard the purity of their daughters is an honorable thing.
So dad has a say in whether or not his adult daughter has sex? He GUARDS her virginity? Seriously? It's one thing to teach your daughters to have a sense of self respect, and another thing to put this weird creepy priority on virginity.

this is not normal. if a father wants his daughter to avoid risky sexual behaviors, possibly premarital sex all together, he should spend time with her. put her in sports. model how a man should treat a woman. these balls, like so many other religious answers to secular issues, do not work. if you think every real world problem has a religious answer, you should join the taliban.
and it's wrong to teach a girl that the most valuable thing she has can be lost by a few minutes of in and out. that's terrible. instead of these dads stalking their daughters "purity", why not emphasize the things that will make her a wonderful, valuable person all her life.

That's just it--girls need to be strong enough, and have enough self respect, to not be pressured to have sex before they're ready. How in the heck does a purity ball accomplish that?
