A University of Rochester student is accusing the college of violating his First Amendment rights after a residence hall adviser reportedly forced him to remove a Confederate flag from his dorm room window over the “discomfort" it was causing.

Matthew Papay, a 19-year-old sophomore from Weaverville, N.C., says the flag was hanging in the window of his residence hall on campus in early October when graduate house adviser Catherine Christian told him to remove it, the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports.

I live in Texas, but I could never understand why so many people want to put the Confederate flag on their cars, shirts, dorm rooms, etc. It's stupid. They'll say it's about history, but I say it's about a hateful history. Could you imagine Germans putting Swastikas everywhere? Of course not, because it's something they're ashamed of! Let's put this to rest, please!

I would have made him put a white flag next to it. I mean seriously, do you see the Germans flying the swatzitca?

Whether Germans do or don't or should or shouldn't, they have every right to fly whatever flag they want. That's what makes us different from those who exist under other flags.

The swastika in antiquity was a symbol of good luck and prosperity.

The Confederate flag represents Southern pride and culture.

Why should those symbols be unable to be displayed just because some people co-opted them in a negative light?

I realize they have the right to fly the flag, but my objection is to the idea of honoring a history of slavery. No matter how you slice it, those states seceded because they wanted to continue owing slaves. Call it state's rights, but it's still the right to own slaves.

It's just a way to self identify as a racist without explicitly saying so. Might as well hang a noose in front of your house.

My family has lived in the South for generations, but I would never say that the Confederate flag represents Southern pride and culture. It's our past, but that particular flag is a symbol of slavery. It wasn't co-opted by people in a negative light. If anything, people nowadays are co-opting it as a representation of pride and culture. It was adopted by the Confederate States after they seceded from the Union because they wanted to continue to allow human bondage.

No, they did not secede because they wanted to own slaves, they seceded because they felt the federal government was treading on their sovereignty.

Harrier thinks that they were wrong and would have supported the Union had he lived during that period, but we need to be historically accurate in order to have an honest discussion.

The Confederate flag has been sullied because of the Civil War, but that does not give anyone the right to prevent another from exercising free speech by displaying it, just because they are offended.

The Confederate flag is the flag of traitors who started a war against the United States and lost their asses. If they are proud of that, they are stupid as well as racist.

Most recently it has been co-opted as a symbol of hatred by the neonazis and is flown next to the nazi flag with a swastika. Decent people would never fly one today.
