Haven't read all the posts but I'll pragmatically address the issue.
From a legal standpoint, the only sustainable equation is a two-person marriage. Tax-wise and estate-wise, multiple spouses create a legal/governmental quagmire.
For example, if marital immunity in legal testimony is assumed and multiple spouses are permitted, then a person could easily marry multiple persons in the interest of obtaining immunity. Re income taxes: multiple spouses = even more convoluted tax rules than currently exist. Re inheritance: I shudder to think what the court burden would be for multiple spouse beneficiaries. Ditto social security, pension, and insurance benefits. Not to mention spousal say in health care / end-of-life situations.
Point is, there are many, many legal and governmental arguments to support a "one-spouse" concept, but nary a single argument to support a gender-specific concept.

Haters will continue to hate. The religious will continue to try to push their belief system on all, but the bottom line is that nobody should be treated like a second class citizen because they don't fit into main stream society. It's the equivalent of the grade school bully mentality. What the Bible says about homosexuality means nothing to me. What science has to say about why homosexuality exists speaks volumes to me. We are all born unique and it's time for those differences to be respected. Everyone has the right to love the person of their choice whether it be same sex, polygamous, heterosexual, or inter racial. It's time to stop the hate, stop the prejudice, and everyone mind our own business. One size does not fit all nor will it ever.
It's time to allow any number of consenting adults to enter into marriage.. even two brothers, three sisters, a brother and sister... heck, it's no one's business who "marries" who anyway.
Problem is in divying up the marriage benefits.
Hmmm. Maybe it's time to end all marriage benefits?
That will put the brakes on the whole controversy pronto!
Just need laws to protect children, right?
Since gay marriage is here, it is time to allow heterosexual men to have multiple wives? Will America fight to allow men to have more then one wife since we marching? I mean as a straight man my rights are being denied.
Is this supposed to make sense?
Because it doesn't.
