One cannot compare how immigration worked yesterday to today. We are no longer a wide open frontier, sparsely populated with plentiful resources, jobs, etc.
Even if we streamlined our immigration process that would not change the fact that we would still need to limit legal immigration due to all of the above.
What does what one's ancestors did or didn't do have to do with those of us alive today? We aren't them and they aren't us. We are all individuals only responsible for our own actions.
The so-called Native American's ancestors migrated here just like everyone else's did. Unless you were born here you are not a native this country.
Xander, They support ideals and ideologues which are antithetical to this nation.
On top of that we are having members of the most violent gang in all of South America(which is just mind numbing to think how you have to out shine the worse of the worse) MS-13 are coming on top of the ones that have already come over. They are nothing even hiding it, taunting the handlers at the hold stations, flashing gang signs, and flashing their tattoos..
On top of that we have confirmed cases of persons with drug resistant TB infecting handlers and Border Patrol agents.
On top of that we have cartels using suppressing sniper fire to pin down Border Patrol agents...
This has to end, and if it does not end here it will end really really really badly for this nation..
The new colossus is a poem, nothing more it show have no say on our laws and our immigration system that should be made for the benefit of America not at a determent.
Uh, supporting closed borders is antithetical to the ideas of liberty.
The bloods and cryps do the exact same crap, and they are American citizens.
We agree on a lot, but I refuse to take the anti-freedom stance on this issue.

It's not a closed border position. It's a controlled border position. The one thing you aren't considering in your declaration of freedom is that freedom is never free. It takes sacrifice and determination to sustain freedom. Not everyone earns freedom.
We quit taking the tired and poor, during the 1930's. They had to go through a check point with a physical exam.
From then until the 1980's, it was the rich and smart.
It would be very different, if this wasn't a welfare entitlement state.

Freedom is something foreigner's own governments need to create in their own countries. Mexico for example is a free country. Are illegals from Mexico coming here for freedom? Um no! Our freedoms are "our" freedoms because we are citizens of this country. We aren't a free for all for foreigners to come here at will nor should we be. Allowing foreigners to migrate here in uncontrolled numbers would remove the freedoms for our own citizens. These open border nuts drive me crazy.
The National Guard was created for emergencies, not turning kids away from the border. What is a national guardsman going to do, are they going to line up every 100 yards and stay there full time. What is Perry's master plan.
By the way is this the same person that was running for election back in 2011 that said "If you say that we should not educate children who have come into our state for no other reason than they've been brought there by no fault of their own, I don't think you have a heart.â€
I'm sure he feels that way today. This issue is about thousands of people coming across the border and inundating the facilities with small children, disease, some criminal element, causing border agents to leave their posts and have to come to the facilities to take care of these people. It's also about the bodies of children found here and there, or atrocities perpetrated on these kids by their smugglers. Perry's stance is completely consistent with his earlier stance - by encouraging these kids to come here we are putting them in harm's way.

Do we need more violent criminals in this nation?
How is a border fence a closed border?
It is not closed mearly secured..They can come across when they have the legal go ahead.
You realize these people support collectivism far more then they do the cause of liberty?..Why do you fight to bring about the people that will vote this nation more into a the death trap of collectivism?
These people can be helped, just in their home nations.
We can not take them, we have too many people in need in our nation.
If you want to help them..If have an idea, You Adopt them.
How many border agents have been infected with tb and other disease? around 50 that we know of..
How many Border Patrol agents have to be shot at before the get luck or just want to see how far they can push us?
A border fence is the solution.
It would be as cheap as a one time cost of $60,000,000,000 While the cost of illegal immigration cost this nation at least $100,000,000,000 a year not to mention the human cost in the way of suppressed wages, destroyed neighborhoods, and people who were victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrates..
It works in Israel on their borders with Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt.
It works in Spain on their border with Morocco.
It works in India on their borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan.
It works in South Korea on their border with North Korea.
It works in Mexico on their border with Guatemala.
"If Fences Don't Work, Why Is There One Around The White House?"-Charles Krauthammer
I don't question that there are some gang members but they are in the minority, fences won't work across a 150 mile border not to mention the entire Gulf of Mexico. The still go over the fences that are already built.
The topic is the National Guard, are they going to arrest these kids, fire warning shots. This is a big mistake on Perry's part.

LOL! Making generalizations about Mexicans and complaining about collectivism...

I just read gunlovers post and I can't see where he mentions Mexicans. Please point this out for me. These illegals are coming from all over South America, and some even from the middle east, china and all over the globe. It doesn't matter where they come from. What does matter is they are migrating into this country illegally. There is a legal means of entering this country. It may be slow and cumbersome but nothing worthwhile ever comes without a price. It's time ALL immigrants into this country paid that price in order to come here. You keep bantering about freedom, but have yet to acknowledge that there is a price to pay to be a free man. There is no easy path and if we continue to allow illegal migration into this country, our freedoms will eventually erode even more than they have.
