I'm not sure if Boehner has to stay until there is a new one. But I don't know what would happen if he just went all Bye Felicia to Congress on October 31st without a replacement.

I admit, I did not know that the Speaker of the House does not have to be a member of Congress. It has never been done before, but the Constitution does not prohibit it (saying that "the House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other officers").
Perhaps you should consider retaking your high school civics class. Since when does the House run the country?
They managed to shut it down two years ago and blow 24 billion dollars without being run out of town on a rail. I'd say they have a pretty big lock on it.

actually I watch them all - including BBC--that's how I know what OAN is - I see all sides - and if the pres had not compromised -nothing would have been passed in almost 7 years. The news ONLY hits on a bill here and there- one that raises ratings-- not the hundreds that pass through their desks.

As a moderate Republican I think this could very well set the stage for the split between the Tea Party crazies and the moderate/centrist Republicans who actually want to govern. The Republicans can then return to the political center and actually govern for the good of the nation by debating and compromising with Democrats ... you know, the way governing is done.
Did you mean "between real conservatives and RINO'S ("progressives")"? The "establishment" Republican RINO's are only interested in partnering with the Democrats to complete the destruction of American freedom and democracy, and turning the country to socialism. They aren't interested in "the good of the nation." There is no compromising with Democrats. You don't compromise with evil. Acquiescing to evil is not "governing."

Nonsensical question. The US Constitution does not make any provisions for political parties and political parties do not run the USA. Elected politicians do.

No, we do not know why he decided not to run for speaker and no, we do not know if he is having an affair. Social media can start a lot of rumors. As for seeing it on TV, I personally haven't seen anything about his affair, maybe you have.

None of which makes this thread title, which implies that Republicans win the contest for affairs and sexual misconduct, any less laughable.
Apparently McCarthy didn't have the needed 218 votes to be elected Speaker. If the establishment can't cobble together enough votes without the help of the Tea Party congressmen, what does that mean for the POTUS election? If the House Leadership is forced by the conservatives to take a harder line on things like "shutting down the government" (and we can differ on which side is actually shutting down anything), or refusing to raise the debt ceiling, the GOP base might cheer, but does it help the party's chances next November, especially in the few competitive states that will decide the 2016 election?
Is it more important to conservatives to make a stand or to win an election?
This is all the result of GOP gerrymandering Congressional districts that give safe haven to Republicans, no matter how radically right they are. Now, the GOP is stuck with ideologues that have no interest in governing.
