Maybe because when anti gun activists get more and more extreme in their ideas for what they want to ban, regulate or legislate out of the definition of "arms" in the 2nd amendment, the other side responds with arguments that are equally extreme in their point of view.
"Every action has an equal and opposite reaction".
It's like guns have gotten a bad rap lately with the mass shootings or something. Of course background checks won't work every time, but it doesn't mean we can't do better. No rules work all the time, it is about risk management.
