It's illogical because stores only lock up what has been stolen at that store. In my community, it's cologne, some skin care products, razors and electric toothbrushes and heads. In the stores some of these posters go to - it's hair care products.

There's nothing illogical or racist about it - it makes perfect sense from a business standpoint.

Or would you prefer people go in and find empty shelves and prices that are triple to offset theft?

It's stupid to blame anyone but the thieves causing this.

ETA: In my community, NONE of the black products are under lock and key. At least not in the 3 stores I was in this morning.

Lock up ALL hair care products or its discriminatory by race, especially now that they know.

They caved. Right now they do not want to be a target of rioting and looting. It's extortion.

If thefts go up, either the prices will increase or the items will be discontinued if they are no longer profitable.

It would appear that it is the theft that is discriminatory by race. Do you care to address that?

It makes it so much harder to steal when they lock things up, clearly they need to fix this situation so that everyone can have equal opportunity to steal.

You’re just blustering here. There is nothing remotely racist about these store policies. Just get over the fact that black people, just like white people, brown people, and yellow people sometimes have to stand in line to get products they need. You aren’t deserving of special policy here just to make your life easier.

My husband just informed me that Lowe’s keeps router bits locked up, and you need an associate to get them for you. OMG! Unfair policy against carpenters! RIOT!

Here's the deal. Retailers are going to unlock those hair products, and the people who use those products AND are thieves are going to steal them. That's the reason they were locked up in the first place. But the retailers have put decided the extra security is not worth the bad PR, so they will take the inevitable losses and pass the cost on to those who don't steal. That's fair, right? They steal, or loot, or riot ... and you pay ... either through higher retail prices or higher taxes. YOU shoulder the burden.

I once bought some ceramic tile sealer, that was a bit pricey, at a big box store. It had a loss control tag on it. It was in a fairly small container.

If it makes you feel any better, the only hair products locked up at my store are for white people (is that really a thing, do people of color never use those products too?). Does that make us racist?

Many of our products are 'scan based' meaning, until a customer buys it, the store doesnt pay for it...if its stolen off the shelf, its on the manufacturer, and due to the extremely high mark up on our types of products, they are not even loosing that much money, the people that DO buy and pay for the products make up for the theft and then some a lot of times!

Some of our contracts we have with suppliers, they cover a certain percentage of shrink/theft, Altria (marlboro and other brand cigarettes) is a one of them, if a customer steals a pack of cigarettes, the store doesnt loose a dime, and the tobacco company is definitely not loosing any money, because generally, 99 out of 100 people are going to pay for the cigarettes, the 1 person that is willing to steal theirs, is not really a significant loss, the mark up is SO HIGH, the people that bought and paid for the product made up for the loss.
