And that is another tactic used. Across states they are closing polling stations making it a long drive for some and laws are passed that make it illegal for folks to drive people to the polling stations that aren't family, etc......

Well according to most of your conservative fellows... you all are "too stupid to get off the democrat plantation" so it stands to reason that you all might be "too stupid to get ID".

That takes care of the money problem but that doesn't take care of the mythical backwoods Mississippi homesteading black family who speaks pidgin English, is illiterate and has no means of transportation capable of reaching a municipal area where they could go to receive such an ID that I've been told is the real victim of voter ID laws. Never mind that such a person is unlikely to even know an election is happening in the first place. Apparently we can drop burner phones near their shacks that run on Android Pidgin V2.0 and have a voice activated voting app installed but we'd have no way to get them an ID to register with. Those people's voices must be heard!

Yep. I hope people are just ignorant of this and not actually in support of it.

Polling Places in Black Communities Continue to Close Ahead of November Elections

Report: More than 1600 Polling Places Have Closed Since the Supreme Court Gutted the Voting Rights Act - Most of them are in minority communities

Southern U.S. states have closed 1,200 polling places in recent years: rights group

Philadelphia voters will have 77% fewer polling places than normal when they go to vote in the primary election June 2 because of the coronavirus.

I'm not buying those statistics - sorry. Where are these people?

This article says:

Quote:
The new data support perhaps the worst-case scenario offered by opponents of restrictive voting laws. Nine percent of black respondents and 9 percent of Hispanic respondents indicated that, in the last election, they (or someone in their household) were told that they lacked the proper identification to vote.

What does that mean? Does than mean they were told they lacked proper ID and therefore could not vote? Or were they told they needed to get it and then came back? Did they simply not have it with them and not come back? Did the Hispanic population qualify to vote anyway? What EXACTLY did the survey question say to elicit the response given? Many questions.

And there are stories in these of elderly folks who are poor and disabled not being able to vote. They don't receive social security or medicare or govt. benefits ? How do they get those without a proper form of identification? What gives really?

Not buying it.

In what universe can it possibly be legal for any government to tell law-abiding people who they can and cannot ride in a car with? Please provide a link that supports this assertion, as I simply cannot believe that it is true.

These have nothing to do with getting a voter ID proving who you are. I would bet the closing of polling places has more to do with consolidation of costs / funding and manpower and population changes. If you read some of these reports posted above - they INFER - not prove discrimination against minority voters.

You'd hope that would be the case...but you should look into it. It's not a pretty picture.

My dad is a 70 y/o guy who served in the military for 27 years and moved all over the place. There was no way we were finding that birth certificate. So we had to order a new one, which was easier because they took another form of ID and is SS card, pay for that, wait for it to arrive.

Then we could update his license which also had a fee. So two payments and weeks later he finally would have able to update his voter registration if he needed to. In essence he would have needed a 2 month lead to get this done if I was not helping. I think most people believe this is a 1 day process.

What I saying is many older black folk do not even know where their birth certificate is. And if it is an original document then good luck with the state accepting it. Some of those documents, and I am talking real documents, look fake as heck. Just a few lines and a signature on regular paper is all down black folk were given at birth.

White folk forget old Black people were not born in white hospitals with good official documentation given at birth. Heck most were born at home and never really had an “official” birth certificate.

This is one of those topics that I think could get sorted out quickly if we had a functioning political system. Solving this should not require this much argument about ID.
My "white" father was born at home in 1930 in the state of West Virginia. At 90 he can tell you exactly where his birth certificate is! A birth certificate is a pretty important document...one should take care of it.
