My husband and I love their music. We did, however, think Natalie Mains was stupid for the remark that pretty much got them banished from country music years ago.
This world has just gone crazy.....

March 10, 2003, when Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks told a crowd in London that they were "ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas," referring to George W. Bush.
Publicity-wise, it was perhaps not the best move considering how generally conservative country music fans tend to be. But I did appreciate the principle of the statement. I remain disgusted with the lead-up to the U.S. invasion. Some things are more important than popularity.

The strange thing is...if someone were to say they were ashamed of Trump coming from NY, I dont think it would be a big deal to anyone! I doubt it would even make the local news for the area.
Its interesting to see how much society has changed since 2003.

I am shocked how some people still hold it against them what Natalie said almost 20 years ago. Admittedly, I don't think that it was wise considering how many of her fans were country music fans. Linda Ronstadt was saying similar things, but appeared unscathed because her fans were different. True story- my 8th grade History teacher (a die-hard Repub and proud Mex-American like myself) walked out of a LR concert in Las Vegas when Linda started bad-mouthing George W in her concert.
Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship, then became just plain Starship.
The Yardbirds became Led Zeppelin.
The Quarrymen became the Beatles.
Smile became Queen.
Bands change names all the time, as the above shows. If the Dixie Chicks want to become The Chicks, I don't see a problem. It's their band, their music, and it's their problem if they don't succeed under the new name.
There's nothing heroic about a change in a band name.
It isn't all that unusual either.
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.... The Dirt Band
The Little Rascals..... The Rascals
Jefferson Airplane.... Jefferson Starship..... Starship
Lots and lots of others, but you get the point.
Times change, and so do old band names. Nothing new here, folks.
