DeSantis pushes expansion of Stand Your Ground law as part of ‘anti-mob’ crackdown

https://www.miamiherald.com/news/pol...247094007.html

Gov. Ron DeSantis has drafted “anti-mob” legislation that would expand Florida’s Stand Your Ground law — a move that critics say will allow armed citizens to shoot suspected looters or anyone engaged in “criminal mischief” that disrupts a business.

Lawyers say it’s just one of the many troubling aspects of the draft bill being pushed by the Republican governor in response to police-brutality protests that erupted across Florida and the United States this summer.

“It allows for vigilantes to justify their actions,” said Denise Georges, a former Miami-Dade County prosecutor who had handled Stand Your Ground cases. “It also allows for death to be the punishment for a property crime — and that is cruel and unusual punishment. We cannot live in a lawless society where taking a life is done so casually and recklessly.”

Considering the threats of violence that are bubbling up from the MAGA crowd, DeSantis may very well regret what he wished for.

unintended consequences

Trump lost. Where's the violence?

Why do think all those business were boarding up? In case Trump lost, or in case Biden lost?

I support "stand your ground" and any expansion of it.

Per the article in the OP:

"Gov. Ron DeSantis has drafted “anti-mob” legislation that would expand Florida’s Stand Your Ground law — a move that critics say will allow armed citizens to shoot suspected looters or anyone engaged in “criminal mischief” that disrupts a business."

Hey, let me give everyone a tip, don't want to get shot, don't commit crimes. It is just so simple. Looters breaking out your windows, well, I don't see why anyone would have an issue, because these are violent people who are threatening your life. No expansion even needed there. After a few get shot, it may discourage others.

Criminal Mischief:

(1)(a) A person commits the offense of criminal mischief if he or she willfully and maliciously injures or damages by any means any real or personal property belonging to another, including, but not limited to, the placement of graffiti thereon or other acts of vandalism thereto.

The article in the OP's post is pretty useless. Very little real information in it, just opinion of the writer. I'm all for a harder stance to these looters and destroyers of property. Protest all you want and as loud and long as you want, but don't destroy property. If law enforcement were allowed to do their jobs and backed up by their leaders this would be a non issue. As it stands, individuals have the right to protect their homes and neighborhood from violence. Glad I live in a state that recognizes that.

Awesome news! People trying to protect their lives and livelihoods from violent savages shouldn't have to worry about being imprisoned or sued into bankruptcy. Stack some of these critters and this crap will end.

Might be a painful lesson for those that were never taught to respect other people's lives or property.
