Was that because of masks or because of no mass gatherings? France had strict mask mandates with fines and covid still exploded in that country.
Probably because the same as everywhere else. People didn't bother with masks under private circumstances, such as when friends and relatives your home.
1. Doctors don't wear masks to stop from catching viruses. They wear them in medical situations to stop blood, saliva, vomit, etc. from contacting their mouths.
Like it or not, doctors are still wearing masks in clinics and require walk-ins to wear therm. Before covid, they never did that. My hospital requires everybody to have masks on. Cloth ones are acceptable. Maybe you live in such a small town where masks are not required that you have been shielded from what has been going on elsewhere.

Did you regress to pre-germ theory days? Just need to balance the humors? Do a little blood letting? Taste the patient's urine?
Just wear your mask very loosely like I do. I have a string between the loops so that holds it in place across the the back of my head, not over my ears. There are extra wide gaps around the chin and cheeks so as not to restrict air. Half the time I have my nose exposed when not around others who might want to be mask nazis and cluck at me. Its not less effective than wearing it tight across your face and having it restrict your breathing. Its actually safer given pneumonia risks. The face shields covering the face and eyes... same deal.
You've basically set the bar (100% effective in blocking out virus) so high that it's comical.
You don't need 100% prevention rate for masks to be effective. If masks is effective only 50% of the time, and if everyone wears masks, it'd have effectively stops the spread of the virus. That's the math they used for the Sinovac vaccine - it's only 50% effective but if everyone get vaccinated it'd still achieve herd immunity.
