A five-year-old story from our archive has been the subject of some recent editorial discussion here. The story, written in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was about confusion at the time surrounding the names and identities of some of the hijackers. This confusion was widely reported and was also acknowledged by the FBI.

The story has been cited ever since by some as evidence that the 9/11 attacks were part of a US government conspiracy.

We later reported on the list of hijackers, thereby superseding the earlier report. In the intervening years we have also reported in detail on the investigation into the attacks, the 9/11 commission and its report.

We’ve carried the full report, executive summary and main findings and, as part of the recent fifth anniversary coverage, a detailed guide to what’s known about what happened on the day. But conspiracy theories have persisted. The confusion over names and identities we reported back in 2001 may have arisen because these were common Arabic and Islamic names.

In an effort to make this clearer, we have made one small change to the original story. Under the FBI picture of Waleed al Shehri we have added the words "A man called Waleed Al Shehri..." to make it as clear as possible that there was confusion over the identity. The rest of the story remains as it was in the archive as a record of the situation at the time.

We recently asked the FBI for a statement, and this is, as things stand, the closest thing we have to a definitive view: The FBI is confident that it has positively identified the nineteen hijackers responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Also, the 9/11 investigation was thoroughly reviewed by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and the House and Senate Joint Inquiry. Neither of these reviews ever raised the issue of doubt about the identity of the nineteen hijackers.

I said ... It is extremely dense to believe on one hand, only 19 secret terrorists + one leader hiding in a cave were required to execute the "mission" with such success, while insisting that it would take 10,000 or more of others to do the same thing.

And what you bolded is what is considered racist. Again, OBL wasn't "hiding" in a cave nor did he live in a "cave" all during the time he has been planning attacks against the US and its allies. He had a huge compound outfitted with some of the most advanced technology at the time.

As to why it would take on order of 10,000 people to accomplish Truther's theories, these are the people you'd have to involve in ORDER to accomplish your claims:

1) All of the employees who work for United Airlines
2) All of the employees who work for American Airlines
3) All of the ground crew at Logan International Airport
4) All of the ground crew at Washington Dulles International Airport
5) All of the ground crew at Newark New Jersey International Airport
6) All of the passengers aboard those planes (even 7 year old Bernard Brown)
7) All of New York City Fire Department members
8) All of New Jersey Port Authority Employees
9) All of the members of the Arlington Fire Department
10) All of the workers for FEMA, Urban Search and Rescue, and Fairfax County Urban Research and Rescue
11) All of the soldiers and workers at Dover Air Force Base
12) Everyone at the NTSB
13) Every single air controller who monitored these planes on radar
14) The "crew" that would be required in order to plant the explosives in the buildings
15) Every single employee who worked in the WTC complex (especially WTC 1 2 and WTC 7) - which is over 10,000 but we can eliminate those who weren't there that morning.
16) Coroner Wally Miller
17) The NYC Police Department
18) NY Governor Pataki
19) All of Silverstein's insurance companies
20) Silverstein
21) Everyone at the FAA
22) Everyone who worked at NEADS
23) Everyone who worked at NATO


And that is just the tip of the ice berg of who would have to have participated in pulling of this biggest tragedy to happen on US Soil since Pearl Harbor.

Now that is what the Official Story said ... that Osama Bin Laden's hideout was in a cave in the mountains of Afghanistan .... not my story ... YOUR STORY .... and has nothing to do with racism .... it was the story told.

No, its 911 turther story. They went off on the "cave" idea, when it was mentioned in a news article but the ARTICLE itself showed exactly how this "cave" was just a huge built complex within a mountain.

Tell me how, through any of the birther's theories it would take less than 19 people to accomplish? Tell us how 19 people can rig 3 buildings in one night for demolition (without anyone who attended the two parties that weekend noticing) and those who came in Monday before not notice the huge gaping holes and missing windows? While at the same time rig the Pentagon and stage a crash in Pennsylvania?

The financing was traced to several Al Quaeda related accounts. If you bothered to read the VARIOUS reports, you'd know this.

Yeah, that's what we have been demanding of truthers for 10 years. Why don't you give a story that matches all evidence provided (not made up BS about demolitions) that fit the scenario as illustrated by this evidence?

10 years and truthers can't even come up with a plausible story that wouldn't involve thousands of people being "in on it". In fact, no truther can agree with each other on what exactly happened, because...EVIDENCE trumps their claims.
