As far as requiring bike lanes, sidewalks, etc., that's been done for a couple decades whenever federal money is involved for any road project down to municipalities upgrading a residential street from funds passed through the state in a CDBG program.
We wanted to build a boardwalk here 25 years ago and in order to get a federal grant we had to run it through ISTEA and put in a bike lane beside it.
why would the Federal Government, that is - all the citizens of the US and particularly income tax payers be paying for a boardwalk in a town/city not named Washington DC?
Instead of speed cameras how about devices to change lights based on traffic condition so cars don't sit and idle and/or have to accelerate all the time.
So comparing data to 2020 when less people were on the road? Makes sense. Seems like the numbers always fluctuate.
Yep basically. All available to read on the United Nations' website.
2020 had more fatalities for whatever reason. Probably too many Maskvidians felt their mask slip off their nose, panicked to adjust, and veered off the road. Maybe some glasses wearers had them fog up from the mask and lost their field of vision.
NYC is up in arms over a couple of quick pedestrian deaths. My city stays up in arms over pedestrian deaths on one particular heavily-traveled thoroughfare. It's always folks running across this 8 lane 45 mph road between lights and without crosswalks.
Failure to yield to pedestrians with the Walk signal within the crosswalk is a real issue. Pedestrians trying to win a race/battle against a 3,000+ pound vehicle is not.

Nothing suggested by Secretary Buttigieg would prevent someone being hit by a car at a cross-walk. That's what I don't understand about these suggestions. Most traffic accidents are cause by people under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or texting and driving. How does having bike lanes everywhere stop texting and driving? It makes absolutely no sense.
.........Instead of speed cameras how about devices to change lights based on traffic condition so cars don't sit and idle and/or have to accelerate all the time.......t
There's more money to had with speed cameras, none with an intelligent grid.
Don't like it? Tell your local and state governments to stop talking federal money.
In my town, a steady red light means 3 more cars can go through it. Cameras at traffic lights would be better than cops stopping cars and getting killed. They could even use cameras for notifying car owners that they have missing brakes and/or headlights. My cop neighbor was killed while stopping a car for a missing brake light.
How do traffic accidents affect auto insurance rates?
How does excessive speeding affect the use, therefore the price of gasoline?
None of us has a god given right to drive 70 in a 40 MPH, but many believe they do have that right.
I rarely ever see 70 in a 40. Most people arent driving out there to commit suicide. At most it is 15-20 over depending on traffic conditions and road design, and lets face it the engineering on many roads would allow for higher speeds but some limits are set low on purpose for speed traps. Some states are better than others. Like California is pretty good about setting reasonable speed limits based on road design, whereas a place like Virginia does not.
