I feel like the article could have gone into greater detail. Ages 16-74. It doesn't mention the distribution of adults reading at or below a 6th grade level. The article mentions that race, ethnicity, where one lives, can play a role. However, it doesn't give a detailed distribution of WHO the barely literate are, where they live, distribution of age, ethnicity, race, employment, criminal history, etc.

The liberal solution would be to simply make the 5th graders even dumber, so that they could lower the percentage of adults who cannot read at a 5th grade level!
It sounds absurd, but democrats have actually sought such measures as "logical remedies" by continuingly lowering standards and expecting lower, and lower achievement from everyone.
As long as everyone is "equal", democrats don't care how poor or stupid the citizens of the US become. Embracing liberalism is a fast track to under performance and suboptimal achievement. Then why is it that Republican states have the highest rates of illiteracy and poverty? Red states do very little when it comes to powering America's engine and/or competing globally.
