Slavery is horrible, and we should be ashamed as a nation of allowing it, but it's not as bad as genocide. When you're enslaved, you can still hope to be freed, sing, have a family, enjoy nature, and know you'll have a legacy (which blacks do in this country and Native Americans don't).

The Indians were basically exterminated like rodents. Could you imagine strangers from another continent telling you your way of life sucked, and you had to believe in their God, and follow their lifestyle, or die? If you DID do this, you still might die. White people embraced African American culture, and it's strong to this day, especially in music where it DOMINATES outside of rock. What do the Indians have? Place names? Casinos? Chapters in history books? That's about it. They're foreigners in their own land to people who are themselves foreigners from the other half of the world.

The only reason blacks are seen as being more oppressed is because they lived to tell about their plight. The Native Americans don't even get that privilege.
WOW, I'll start off by saying this was a very interesting and good topic you came up with.

To make my answer short, the indians defenitely got it worse.

Honestly, Black people, Be proud of our ancestors roles as slaves. This country would not be as prosperous if it had never happened.

Another thing, this land belonged to NOBODY. Just like whites immigrated here, so did indians come across the bering straight, it just so happens they got here before whites.

I love native americans, and their culture. (REAL native americans, not the mexicans who don't know their history, and make up stories about being "native" to this land.)

According to the links I have just listed, I don't think Africans would have had it better in America.
Indeed. Additionally, had slavery and sanctioned racial oppression never occurred and Africans been able to immigrate here of their own accord, most American blacks today would pretty much be as economically successful and upwardly mobile as their African immigrant contemporaries.

I think the argument can be made that the two histories were equally atrocious. It's kind of like the choice between a lifetime of dehumanizing confinement and more or less instantaneous death. Personally, though, I'd choose death before dishonor and deprived liberty.

I still don't see why we're comparing the two?

Can we please stop with these freaking stupid race threads already? "We Need Afrocentric Schools" or "White People are good.. but Racist.."

I'm tired of everyone having a pissing contest about who has had it worse, why, how, and when..get over it and make a better future for yourself and "your" people instead of pissing and moaning all Goddamned day.

An outsider telling us to get over it?

As retribution for slavery, can't we just allow multi-billion casinos to be run in the projects, and cigarettes to be sold tax-free?

Being both Native American Indians, and black with a little Irish, I can say that I feel that the Inidans had it worse. The writers who mention the killing by both races to each other is also correct. Indians killed Indians, Black killed black, Irish killed Irish all races have killed one another. The point here is that the Indians land was stollen, they were stripped of their way of living, made to live in shacks that was worse than living in their tents, The white man killed the buffalo in order to strave them to death. General Custer murdered women, children, old people and babies, all with the government backing in order to steal their land the gold that they had. This is not race hatred and it should not be demeaning it is simpley history and it is the truth. As for them being killed in wars many were, wars that the white man started. They simply fought trying to hold on to a way of life that they loved. Where as all Indians may have not been genocide, their way of life was.

As for the Blacks they may not all have been treated the same but never the less the results are bad either way. Some were beaten, had certain body parts cut off for trying to escape, or for just trying to learn how to read and write. Women were raped and made to have the white man baby just so he could increse his slave population. Should they have been ashamed? Yes they should have. There was those whites who did not approve of what was going on and did what they could to help. But there was more who loved the thought of having free labor so much so that the KKK was formed. Check your history and then maybe you won't look upon what the people are saying as being racest just for voicing the true facts.

I'm not sure why we're comparing the two, either. Both had it bad; one did not have it better than the other.

Any people who is taken to a country against their will and is systematically brainwashed of all of their cultural ancestry and human rights, and made dependent on another group of people out of fear, is made to distrust everyone around him and bow to his "masters," and is allowed to teach this new way of thinking to his offspring, is going to have difficulty recovering.

Likewise, any people who is systematically lied to, to whom genocide is attempted, is brainwashed to believe that their cultural beliefs are demonic, and is forced to surrender their roots to assimilate into a new culture out of the need to survive, is also going to have a difficult time recovering. Even gambling in casinos on Native American reservations is a sign of oppression that few people recognize.
