It is sad really that warped minds see this lovely Holiday as something evil or to be avoided. How did so many come to this way of thinking? Maybe they were abused beyond repair at some point.
Nah. They're okay. They just subscribe to Utne, Mother Jones, and The Nation -- and believe what they read....
Christ is an integral part of YOUR Christmas. He isn't any part at all of MINE. Get lost with your We Own the Holiday garbage.
Well, that's just silly. Not to mention rude, and more than a touch arrogant. Of course they own the holiday. The holiday is CHRISTMAS. Yes, CHRISTIANS created the holiday and define the hoiday. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. If you are celebrating Christmas, then you are celebrating the birth of christ. You can't just change the definition of the word to suit your whims & wants. Now, if you want to take Decenber 25th off, and have a party and a tree, but don't believe in Christ, you go right ahead & do that, all you want. BUt in that case, you aren't celebrating christmas, you're just taking advantage of a convenient day of celebration. Please though, don't be so pompous and arrogant that you think it's ok to tell CHRISTIANS that CHRISTMAS doesn't involve CHRIST.
As a Christian myself, technically there is nothing in the Bible that says anything about Christmas. It is a man made holiday.
It is believed from New Testament writings that Jesus was born sometime in the winter months. Man picked December 25.
No where does Jesus tell us to celebrate his birth. We are though instructed to remember his death, burial and resurection (BTW, there is no mention of Easter either).
The celebration of the life and death of Jesus is not meant to be only two days a year.
BTW, my family does celebrate Christmas, but as a family holiday, like Thanksgiving, etc..
I realize this post is more suited for the religious forums.
Well, of course it's a man made holiday. Would you do me the favor of pointing out any & all holidays that are NOT man made? I can't think of any myself.
Of course there is a mention of Easter. You just pointed it out. Christians are instructed to remember Christ's death, burial, and ressurection. It wasn't named Easter when the instruction was given, but that instruction is a pretty darned good definition of Easter, is it not?
The fact that Jesus didn't tell you to celebrate his birth should not be reason for other mere mortals to try to prevent you from celebrating such.
I can just see the guys at the ADF. "Well, let's send a request to put a Jesus bauble on the tree. They'll say no, of course, since it's not constitutional. Then we'll send the press release around to wnd and all those boys....and voila, three months worth of donations!"
Educate us please; I'd like to see where in the Constitution it says that the public display of religion is not allowed.

It's even sadder when drama queens make silly remarks that have nothing to do with the thread....maybe they were abused beyond repair.
Guess I missed whoever posted that Christmas was evil....
Mostly I see people who enjoy Christmas without shoving it down other's throats(those are the nice decent people). ..and then there's a few others who think they should shove their religion onto PUBLIC property because they're so weak in their faith and stupid to boot that anything less and they'd fall to pieces....maybe they were abused beyond repair at some point????
Actually I've lived in a community with a large Jewish population and they did close the schools for various Jewish holidays. I don't think they were doing it to honor the holiday, but just be practical. If a large number of students are don't going to show up then what is the point in having the school open.
It's not just the communities with large Jewish populations. I believe most schools in the state of NJ are closed for certain of the Jewish holidays. So much for only recognizing Christian holidays.
Well, I'm not so sure about something like Ramadan, but if you have another day that you observe a tradtion where you don't want to work, or go to school, just call out "sick" that day.
Gee, so this means I can put up the Nativity scene on the City Hall Lawn???
Why would you want to put decorations on property that doesn't belong to you? Seriously, tell me. I want to know.
