It's not just "they're stupid", many disenfranchised people of all stripes simply do not trust the government to do anything right, and thus any attempt at health care reform will be shot down.
I personally find it hilarious that people who would benefit from this greatly are by and large against a bill which would provide health care insurance. Oh well. I don't care anymore. Be poorer and in worse health. You dug your own grave. And the more well-off social conservatives dug it too.
Further more, to a lot of poor conservatives, especially religious ones, the two issues that count most dearly to their hearts and souls are to ban abortion and protect marriage from homosexuals. Republicans are generally behind them on those two issues. Democrats are not. Democrats, like Obama has spoke of, are for denying companies tax breaks for U. S. companies that move employment operations overseas. Republicans are not. To many poor conservatives being behind someone who's against abortion and same sex marriage is far more impantant than companies getting tax breaks.

I know you are probably not going to understand this, but money is not the most important thing in life to some people. Some of us were taught to think of ideals as being more important than money. What good is money if you live in a society where there is no freedom to do with that money as you wish? The health care system being proposed is sending our nation in a socialistic and communistic direction and therefore would be worse than any benefit that would come to anyone from it.

Not every Democrat is in favor of same-sex marriage or abortion.
Just as you have Republicans for choice, you have Democrats who are against gay rights.
It seems more in line with Republican views for a woman to CHOOSE to have an abortion. Less government involvement in people's personal lives? Of course I know they cheery pick which issues they want government to be involved in.

I call BS.
There was a proposal to implement a non-profit system of PRIVATE COMPANIES WHO THE GOVERNMENT HELPS START UP. NOTHING MORE. Sh*t you people who spew the same garbage as your idiot conservative radio talk show hosts must not have brains. Go read a book.,

How is the health care "SYSTEM" being proposed socialistic OR communistic?
It is the continuation of the status quo where insurance companies can deny people coverage, they can deny claims, they can raise your premiums as much as they like, etc.
The health care bill doesn't change the system at all. It's still fee for service, it's great for the rich and sucks for the poor.
We don't have a health care SYSTEM, we have a health care MARKET! If you have money...step right up! It's the best "system" in the world. If you're poor, take a number and we'll think about treating you.
There have been similar studies, and IIRC there was one that focused on the Scots/Irish folks of Appalachia, who will be contrary just to be contrary. These are the people who fit that classic "country boy" stereotype of fighting over anything and then shaking hands and having a beer with you.
But there are many more reasons, my favorite being the racism that pervades much of this country, the south in particular; the usual red states. Yes, good folks in many ways, but stuck in a rut that has been generations in the making. I know people like that, they think the government only wants to do things to help black people, that's why the tea party people and Palin fans we see on TV are mostly white haired white people.

Gads! Someone did a book on just what I was talking about. The subtitle of the book is "Race, Media, and the Politics of Antipoverty Policy" and it sure fits the bill. Truth is, about 75% of welfare stopped in the mid 1990's between Newt Gingrich's "Contract With America" and Clinton co-opting the effort for his own glory. But the images of welfare and "the lazy poor" still linger in people's minds, and it's now poisoned the health care debate.
