Why do poor conservatives vote against social policies that would benefit them?
Social policy includes human intervention. The only reasonable intervention into social policy is > none.

This presidency is the scariest I remember in my lifetime. He is determined to make this a secular and an Islamic nation and to remake us in the image of socialist Europe.

Just for your information we are a secular nation. We always have been and hopefully always will be. There seems to be a few Christian terrorists that would like to make a Christian theocracy out of this great country. They are some sick sick people.

1.) Because they don't believe socialism will benefit them. (And they are right!)

2.) They don't want to be the receivers of stolen goods.

Hope this helps.

It's nice to see that not only conservatives are being called "poor and stupid' by a lot of us in this thread, but the rich, smart, gay straight, liberal, Democrat, Republican, independent, Tea Party people,, and on and on

Instead of calling those who oppose "Obamacare," stupid, conservative, poor, etc., why don't you stop and think about the following?

1. At least two-thirds of Americans oppose the healthcare bill. Are you implying that 2/3rd of Americans are conservative? Please take your time and think about it.

2. At least 2/3rd of Massachusetts are Democrat. This State has its own version of healthcare, and according to the news they are getting tired of its cost (too expensive), and they don't want another national healthcare that would screw-up even more the mess they already have in their hands. Obama when there to change their minds and vote Democrat, and made things worst.

Don't you realize what is happening to our politics around the nation? Within a two-thirds of Americans a large number are Democrat, a larger number are Republican, independent, rich, poor, conservative, liberal, gay, straight, crazy, sane, and on and on... In the other one-third that are pro-Obamacare all are rich, liberal, and smart?

So, according to a lot of you, only poor conservative voters are "stupid" for opposing Obamacare

If you have a problem with what I'm saying, feel free to post some unbiased data that proves me wrong.

The health care bill being proposed is not single payer or socialized medicine. It just expands private health insurance by providing government $$ in the form of subsidies to help people who can't afford private health insurance obtain it.

Now I know the people on Fox News, the GOP, and all the other propagandists out there will tell you it's a "government takeover" of heath care but it helps to do your own research.
I think I have said enough on here about this subject and evidently some of you must think it was effective judging by the personal attacks. I do not agree with a socialistic or communistic form of government. I helped out our communty by providing a service to people at a lower rate than the quality of service given. My sister told me a long time ago that I was just working so I could pay taxes and much of what I made did go to pay taxes. So I have no apologies for reaping any benefits that job provided. Many libraries in our nation are volunteer only and have books provided by donations. I feel very fortunate to have been able to do what we call my volunteer government job to benefit the community. There are many other government employees doing the same thing. Some people even appreciate the amount of our jobs that are voluntary. Just because one is a government employee does not mean that one agrees with everything that government does. Being a government employee does limit ones freedom of speech while on the job. I appreciate being able to discuss things on these threads, but while I don't like the personal attacks; I don't like to see my NCN too many times on one thread.

Now on the subject: Every time I see that the government is making a company pay for healthcare, giving money to companies because they are too big to fail??, etc.; it makes me cringe. There is just something not right about that. I think this government is cherry picking who they want to still be in business and none of it is to the benefit of anyone in North Carolina. Our unemployment is the highest in 30 years.

I personally find it hilarious that people who would benefit from this greatly are by and large against a bill which would provide health care insurance. Oh well. I don't care anymore. Be poorer and in worse health. You dug your own grave. And the more well-off social conservatives dug it too.
I think it's really condescending to assume that someone who votes or thinks differently than you is necessarily voting "against their own interest". I think people like to decide for themselves what's in their own best interest. The only reason someone would vote against their own interests is error or stupidity.

I think a better question would be, "why do poor conservatives have such different priorities than those I would expect." I think there are a number of different reasons, many of which have already been mentioned. Some people are distrustful of the government, some people are doubtful of the government's ability to improve anything, some people dislike having things given to them (and, more likely, others).

One is republican under one of two circumstances - stupid or just plain selfish/greedy (with a touch of stupid). This isn't to say one can't be stupid and selfish at the same time, but the stupid for some reason view themselves as a member or potential member of the 1% club (those who benefit from republican tactics) when they will never be. The selfish/greedy are the 1% or very well off (who don't realize they are not in the 1%).

Case in point - I have a friend whose net worth is around $400k and I am being generous, probably more like $300K. He is 74 and has a modest pension and health care for life. He, nonetheless, identifies himself as in the top 5% of those well off and identifies with the power elite. He is mistaken. Due to the fact he has health care for life, he begrudges those who would "not work for it" in his words. What he doesn't realize is he had a desk job in the military for 34 years when one could stay at a job for 34 years. He had a decent job with a high school education - the kind of job he would now need a master's degree to hold. He was born at the right time.

My net worth is more than his and I consider myself the average Joe. I am smart enough to know I will never be a member of the 1% club and I vote accordingly - in line with my best interests. Democrat. Liberal. Progressive.

Conservatives are basically people afraid of the world & very insecure about the future. Weak people even will vote against benefits for themselves because they would rather keep things the way they are.

Funny thing about it is this- when the programs pass they are usually the first ones in line for the goodies. If you take your kids to any Kool Smiles here in Georgia you will see hordes of white working class (presumably conservatives) in there with the kids because Kool Smiles takes Peachcare. These people opposed the hell out of Schip, Medicare, the school lunch program and other "stolen goods" but yet they are usually at the front of the line on sign up day. That apparently means it does benefit them and they don't mind getting it.

People vote for their own pocket. That's the way it is, and it has nothing to do with being Democrat, Republican, stupid, nor smart. It seems that some of you have your minds made-up and only see yourselves in the picture, without realizing that a great majority of Americans oppose Obamacare simply because nothing the government does is free. Who do you think is paying for the government spending that is now out of control?
