There are plenty of gigabit options in Cary. But Chattanooga has a municipal broadband network. I really don't think that matters

Seems like municipal broadband has brought Chattanooga great prosperity so it probably does matter.

The benefits of broadband

Beyond its own profit-and-loss statements, the EPB’s broadband service has brought huge benefits to the city. A recent analysis showed that Chattanooga recorded a “community benefit” worth $2.69 billion in the past decade. This exercise in quantification included the value of 9,516 jobs created in the city and its surrounding areas over the past decade, the country’s low unemployment rate, and the savings realized through a smart power grid that relies on the internet infrastructure.

The NCGA was bought off by the internet service providers years ago when Wilson developed great municipal broadband service.
Local governments are not allowed to provide internet services.

Municipal Broadband War Reignited in Biden’s Infrastructure Push
Quote:
President Joe Biden wants to make it easier for cities to build and operate their own broadband networks, in competition with companies like Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc., to expand internet access as part of his sweeping infrastructure proposal.
I'm all for allowing municipalities to build and operate their own fiber optic networks if it will help accelerate the rate of proliferation. The coronavirus pandemic has made it crystal clear how desperately high-speed internet access is needed for effectively working from home or for distance learning.

Apparently the Biden administration believes that a law to override the states' limits on their own municipalities will not be struck down like the FCC's action was. Congress has more legal powers than the FCC, to be sure. But even if the Biden proposal passes the Senate, it's sure to be challenged in court again by the telephone companies, cable companies, etc. This could take 3-4 years to play out.

And, greater deployment of broadband ensures more union construction and union utility jobs.

Don't kid yourself that the CWA cares about people more than dues and power.

I don't really care as long as ISPs are forced to be declared utilities.

This is how I feel as well. Not that my opinion really matters but as an avid video gamer and a consumer of Epic's products - my opinion should carry some extra weight.
