We're talking about the third pick in the 2018 draft. Statistics show that the top three players in a given draft almost always have solid NHL careers. The guy hasn't lit up the league like Svech did, but he's young, has good size, has a wicked shot, and has smarts on the ice. Plus, we offered only a one-year deal. If he's not worth the $6 million, he walks. What's more important is the Carolina draft picks that go to Montreal as compensation. $6 million is no accident. Montreal would get a first and a third. If the number were any higher, Montreal would get a first, a second, and a third.

Listen to the podcast. It is pretty succinct. They agree that there is probably an underlying handshake agreement for an extension for Kotkaniemi for less than $6.1 million AAV.
If they extend two years @ $3.0 million each, that is a $4 million AAV, and gets him out of Montreal.
What/how does this affect Necas next season? If KK plays here and exceeds expectations, he'll want his big pay-day too. I'd have to think that Trochek and Nino will likely get better paydays elsewhere next season, Nino probably is a goner anyway.
I guess my point is, I hope this doesn't throw us for a loop when the time comes to sign Necas, because he's quite important to keep.

We can only hope that Kotkaniemi plays to his expected potential An embarrassment of riches is every GM's dream.
By 2022-2023, hopefully I say, we may have a higher cap and less COVID, and there may be more money for salaries.
This year is not hard, at this point. The next two will be loaded with intrigue.
