The writer of the above post may not believe that the Christian God speaks or spoke through Popes, Bishops, etc., but the Bible clearly states that God speaks his world through Preachers, Bishops, Popes, etc. If this were not the case, would it not be rather strange to say the least, for laymen in the Church to follow the teachings of Church leaders who God isn't even speaking thru? In essence, there would be no need for a church if God were not speaking through those who he supposedly, appointed or annointed to lead the people.
The Bible is certainly not clear about speaking through preachers, bishops, popes, etc. Like I said, God can speak through atheists, agnostics, idiots, geniuses, or whomever else he wants to speak through. The Bible makes it clear that God only speaks authoritatively (such as Scripture) through prophets, as only prophets are held to such a high standard.
In Protestant churches, we really don't think God commands us to obey their teachings, but the teachings of the Bible and therefore the prophets. Pastors are meant to be guides, not infallible spokesmen of God.

Well, I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. But, I do recall hearing many preachers proclaim the scripture "...How can the people hear without a Preacher", to persuade the flock into believing every word they spoke was coming directly from God.

If I ever heard a preacher say that I would get up and leave (and I am a Christian).
Maybe you forgot when Adam and Eve were fooled by the devil and God drove them form the garden. He also couldn't let them live forever eating from the tree of life. God separated Himself from mankind. When Adam and Eve chose to eat that fruit, God could not remain connected with them and sin was present also. That's when He began to speak to mens hearts and spirits. Eventually sending His son Jesus Christ to give the good news that mankind now had a choice. Whether to listen to Him and be able to one day return to Him or remain in the captivity of the sinful nature they had come to have through the devil. Since God separated Himself from man, he sent the next best thing, His son Jesus Christ. WHO IS THE LIVING WORD OF GOD.
By the way do you know of any other so called gods who spoke for themselves?
