Nobody knows the fact of what happens. Period. No one has come back with any evidence.
If someone wants to make up and believe in some fanciful story and it gives them a warm fuzzy feeling, fine. Does not mean it is true, regardless of any story the living have produced.
The dead knows nothing until the resurrection. There will be 2 resurrections, the 1st are for the saints (true believers) who will be given glorified eternal bodies to rule the humans on earth with Jesus Christ for 1000 years. After the 1000 years are over comes the 2nd resurrection of the rest of mankind to face God on Judgment Day. The saved will receive eternal life while the wicked will die a second death in the Lake of Fire. This is the truth revealed in the Bible.

A lot of people believe that death is oblivion forever, so that they won't be held accountable for the evil they may have done. As Krishnamurti said (in effect) "people worry about death when they have no idea what's it's even like." At the age of 3, I had no concept of age 62.

The soul after death
First of all, this website crashed my Firefox
Second:
"The soul of man gets out of the body [by death], as does the chicken get out of the egg;
the soul will remain alive in the world of souls: eating, drinking, seeing, hearing, perceiving and feeling the pleasure and pain."
I think i've seen enough, no need to read any farther...

This is a parable: the egg shell resembles the material body, the chicken resembles the soul;
So after the chicken has been completely created inside the egg-shell, there will be no need for the egg-shell anymore, and the chicken will crack it and leave it and will not return to it afterwards; because the purpose from the egg is to form a chicken inside it.
Similarly, the purpose from the body is to form the soul inside it to be an ethereal true copy of the body; then when the formation of the soul is complete, no need there will be for the body, and the soul will leave it permanently after death and will not return to it afterwards.
So the body will rot and decay, while the soul will survive forever.
Moreover, the true man is the soul: it is the soul that sees, hears and perceives the pain and pleasure, while the body cannot do anything of that following the soul's departure from it by death.

There are consequences in this world for every word you say and every action you take. Disbelieving in an afterlife doesn't mean there are no consequences for your actions. Observation shows that certain actions harm others while other actions help others. The way you choose to act defines the world around you because your actions affect those around you, therefore you are accountable for your actions within this life.
