Save up 5 months worth of expenses, like $8,0000. If you really are determined to make it in SD plan on living dirt cheap for the first year [living on top ramen, cheap studio apartment for $700/month etc..] and make sure to account for the higher cost of living. For example, gas here in Phoenix is about $3.85/gal. Well, I drove over to SD for a little presidents day weekend vacation and found gas to be $4.55/gal. It's things like that that'll give you some sticker shock.

Other advice would be to make sure that your car is paid off, you have a full years worth of car insurance purchased and have no credit card debt. This will help limit your monthly bills to only rent, food and gas.

And most people thought that kind of living was only in college! LOL. You'd think that once you spent a small fortune getting a University Degree those days of living on ramen noodles was over. But I imagine lots of people living in SD are living that kind of lifestyle.

The girl, or I should say woman that cuts my hair has a college degree is 37 years old and still has roommates and lives the "ramen noodle lifestyle". A bit sad to me to think about.

I don't where you paid $4.55 /gal unless it was premium in the mountains. I bought Shell regular yesterday and paid $4.23.

Premium at a gas station in La Mesa on my way out of town. I only put in 4 gallons because of the high prices then filled up as soon as I got to Yuma for around $3.40/gal.

A lot of you people assume that everybody in San Diego earns minimum wage. Having a degree doesn't mean anything unless it is job related like engineering, law, computer science etc.

The OP will have a Mechanical Engineering Degree which will make them pretty employable at a fairly decent salary probably around $65-70K to start. A single person can live pretty comfortably in San Diego on that salary.

To the OP:

If you would like me to send you a private message, I can give you a few leads on good companies to work for in San Diego. I am not a recruiter and have no vested interest other helping you if I can.

San Diego is a great place to live and you will love it.

thank you for the advice, but from what i've found the cost of living isn't that much higher. yes housing is high, but a lot of this has already been mentioned and my opinion stays the same. When i was there, gas was 3.56$ and back home it was about 3.47 or something. vegetables, fruits, food are all cheaper than what i'm used to. clothing, cheaper... I said after my visit there that the COL was greatly exaggerated. Plus, with my future salary, I won't be living paycheck to paycheck. yay!
