I love that movie too....but I would edit out all the "love" scenes; cut at least an hour out of movie and make it more of a docudrama based on facts only. Except I'd keep the father/son aspect of the film, because it added interest and different generational viewpoints to the film. .

I was watching a program from the Military Channel on the new CVN-21 platform (would be CVN-78).

Very interesting. My dad served on the USS Saratoga in the 70s and he said one of the worse things was never being able to sleep well because those steam catapult launches were so loud!

Anyways, even though they're expensive I'm glad we're still committed to our nuclear carrier program. Aside from nuclear deterrence, I don't know of any other weapons platform that tells would-be aggressors to sit down and shut up quite as effectively. There's a reason China was so upset at our sending a carrier battle group nearby for drills with the South Koreans. Nuclear submarines are also some of our best weapons but by their nature no one knows (hopefully) when they're around!

if china gets that hypersonic missile, an aircraft carrier becomes a huge sitting duck.

Yeah I posted a couple pages back about how taking carriers close to mainland China or Iran could be risky. Have to keep them out of range of missiles but in range of their F-35s.

Even if you take out the carrier you still have hundreds of missiles from other CBG vessels and nuclear submarines that undoubtedly would be (and probably are) in the area capable of reaching land targets.

You do bring up the larger point that while China can't hope to match our global force projection capability they do have the $ and the will to build up their military enough in the short term to challenge our dominance of the Western half of the Pacific Ocean. Thankfully they also have India on their plate as an Indian Navy domination of the Indian Ocean would be unacceptable for China's economic strategy. Passage through the Strait of Malacca and through the Indian Ocean to oil reserves will be China's main geopolitical strategy in the future.

I wouldn't be so quick to discount the ESSM's as they along with it's guidance and radar system AN/SPY-1 are supposedly a badass state of the art carrier missle defense system from what i've been told.

Construction on the first ship in the series was begun in 2007 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.

This class features 14 new design features; foremost of which is electromagnetic aircraft launching systems, which will replace the current steam catapult launching system. Also advanced arresting gear to assist in aircraft landings, a redesigned nuclear reactor, stealthier features and improved self defense as well as other advancements. It's designation will be CVN 78.

I predict that these will fall under budget cuts as unnecessary bloated weapon systems.
